There is no connection between the US State and the European Country.
The state was named after King George 2nd of Britain when it was established as a colony in 1732.
The area now making up the European country became known as Georgia in the middle ages from a Persian word, gurğ, ğurğ,derived from a word meaning "land of wolves." Around 1200 the name began to be connected with St, George. Georgians call themselves Kartvelians, from a possible ancestor named Kartlos.
The given name Georgia is the feminine form of George, which is from Greek and means "farmer". Women may also be named directly after the state or country for some reason, place of birth for example.
St George is of course the dragon slayer, but I dunno if he killed any wolves or Persians either for that matter.
The State of Georgia has the same name as the Country of Georgia in the former Soviet Union. The name of the country, Georgia, was named for Saint George. The state of Georgia, in the United States is named after King George II of Great Britain.
