As a medical assistant with an associates degree, I've worked in many doctor offices that we were trusted to have been taught and refreshed by the doctor we worked for to read the TB test. I don't understand being certified! Most offices could care less if you are a "Certified" Medical Assistant or not. Very expensive to be certified, doctors offices don't want to pay for it either.

Usually a needle is used to make a small bubble of fluid containing proteins (PPD) under the skin. 2-3 days later the test is read by looking for thickening of the skin at the injection site.

When do you say someone is positive of Mantoux test?

A Mantoux test is done by injecting a very small amount of TB protein ( antigens) under the top layer of skin. The skin test is then read 2 or 3 days later, a positive test, doesn't always mean someone has TB; it just means that you have been exposed to TB at sometime in your life, a follow up XRay or CT scan to reveal if there is an active infection should be done.A sputum test can also be done to determine if there is active infection.
