The significance of sacrifice as a religious ritual, well depending really on the religion varys. As for christians we don't really sacrifice any more we sorta give things up for are God after we accepted him to be our savior.

Before Christ came we did sacrifice to become clean of our sins. The blood shed of certain animals and specific animals cleansed people of their particular sin. There is also a specific order they followed to become forgiven. I do not know all the kinds of sins that goes with the specific animal sacrifices, but if you read through out the Old Testiment of The Bible it may help towards this subject some.

Because it shows that nothing is before God. If your favorite thing is to watch TV and sports, sacrifice it for the week and pray to God to show him that Sports is not in front of him. But the Bible also says Obedience before Sacrifice(Isaiah 1:1-11).

The importance of a sacrifice was a religious ritual in olden days. people sacrificed animals to wipe of their sins. It should be a spotless animal. But after the death of Jesus Christ , there is no need to do it. it was washed away , that is our sins , on that cross at Calvary.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe significance of sacrifice in Christianity is all pervading. It is the "end" of Christianity as in the Sacrifice of Our Blessed Lord on the Cross. Our entire lives must become a sacrifice united with His One Perfect Sacrifice, or we can not attain salvation. Sacrifice in Christianity has classically been defined as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving or as Jesus puts it, "Amen I say to you, as long as you did it for one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it to me."

from Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Ludwig Ott, Tan Books and Publishers, Inc. 1974

By sacrifice is understood in the widest sense, the surrender of some good for the sake of a good aim. The religious meaning attached to sacrifice in the wider sense is every inner act of self-surrender to God, and every outer manifestation of the inner sacrificial disposition, e.g., prayer, alms-giving, mortification. Cf. Ps. 50, 19; 140, 2; Os. 14, 3; Ecclus 35, 4; Rom 12, 1.

from The Catechism of the Catholic Church, second edition, English translation 1994

Sacrifice

2099 It is right to offer sacrifice to God as a sign of adoration and gratitude, supplication and communion: "Every action done so as to cling to God in communion of holiness, and thus achieve blessedness, is a true sacrifice." (St. Augustine, De civ. Dei 10, 6: J.P. Migne, ed., Patrologia Latina {Paris: 1841-1855} 41, 283)

2100 Outward sacrifice, to be genuine, must be the expression of spiritual sacrifice: "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit . . ." (Ps 51:17.) The prophets of the Old Covenant often denounced sacrifices that were not from the heart or not coupled with love of neighbor. (Cf. Am 5:21-25; Isa 1:10-20.) Jesus recalls the words of the prophet Hosea: "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." (Mt 9:13; 12:7; cf. Hos 6:6) The only perfect sacrifice is the one that Christ offered on the cross as a total offering to the Father's love and for our salvation. (Cf. Heb 9:13-14) By uniting ourselves with his sacrifice we can make our lives a sacrifice to God.
