∙ 10y agoAnimals take in energy in the food they eat. A horse eating grass takes in carbon atoms which can combine with oxygen to release energy for the muscles. The resulting carbon dioxide CO2 is breathed out. This is part of the carbon cycle.
The Sun's energy was used to grow the grass in the first place through photosynthesis which dissociates carbon and oxygen molecules from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. That energy is released when the carbon re-combines with the oxygen.
