Because no one caresBasically, a 'lower class' or non-famous person's death is not of enough general interest to warrant a big report.

Take, for example, someone working an assembly line in a automobile manufacturing plant. If the guy that pushes the button to move the conveyor belt dies of a heart attack, who does it affect? His family, maybe the folks next to him, and his boss because now he has to get someone else to do the work. The people that drive the cars that he helped build will peobably never know or care because they basically didn't know he existed.

Now consider Julia Roberts. She's been in movies and on TV. She even played a character in a movie that pretended to be Julia Roberts. All across America and probably the world (at least the English speaking nations) you will find people that recognize her face and have probably enjoyed seeing her in a movie. When she dies, there will be mention of it in news because there will be people interested to learn that there will be no more new Julia Roberts movies, and maybe the one that she was working on will now be changed.

In conclusion, the reason (in my opinon) that famous people get news coverage when they die is because they've affected a lot of people. More importantly, a lot of people KNOW that they've been affected by them. Famous people have a face to go with the name, and they provide something unique, even if it's just their looks.
