White or "decolorized" iodine is the original product. The most common use of iodine is to sanitize an area of the body prior to performing surgery. The "colorized" iodine allows the surgeon assurance that the proper area is sterilized. Since there is little demand for white iodine, it is difficut to find.
White iodine is a salt such as potassium iodide which is clear like table salt. If you put it on your skin, it will be clear, but if you add a little hydrogen peroxide on your skin, it will turn the characteristic orange color of iodine because the iodide will be converted to elemental iodine.
