Best Answer

Latching current is the minimum amount of current required to maintain the thyristor in on-state immediately after a thyristor is turned on..

and Holding current is a minimum current that is required to maintain the thyristor in on-state not allowing it to turn off.

Alternative Answer

If you are referring to a relay or contactor, when the relay is de-energised, there is a break in the magnetic circuit, so the magnetic circuit has an airgap which makes it have a high reluctance. When the relay is energised, the magnetic circuit causes the armature to close, removing the airgap and reducing the value of reluctance. So, when you first energise the relay, there must be a greater magnetomotive to overcome the higher reluctance. When the relay is closed, a lower magnetomotive force will be sufficient to overcome the lower reluctance and maintain the relay closed.

How do you calculate holding current of scr when latching current is given?

we know that ratio of holding current to latching current in scr is 0.4.

Does the ratio of latching current to holding current depends upon gate current?

yes

Why latching current is more than holding current in thyristor?

Holding current is a kind of Imin i.e., a minimum rating current which should not be decreased less than this limit so that SCR will be off(Maximum limit).Whereas latching current is again a limit which is Imini.e., a minimum current that should be there to make it on(Minimum limit). So obviously Holding current is more than latching current. If u still have the confusion go through the link below ALi RAZA

What is holding current and latching current?

HOLDING CURRENT: The minimum value of current that must be there to provide a path between anode and cathode to flow anode current and thus maintain a thyristor in the on state.0 LATCHING CURRENT: The minimum anode current required to maintain a thyristor in on-state immediately after a thyristor has be triggered on. IL>IHrate of flow of charge is known as current

What is the ratio of latching current to holding current?

Latching current is the current flowing between anode to Cathode when thyristor is turned on using gate pulse. If the gate pulse is removed before the required min amount of latching current value is not reached thyristor will turn off. To keep the thyristor in on state the gate pulse duration should be so adjusted that the min latching current value is reached before it ends.

What are the difference between holding and latching current?

current holding in nothing but just hold the current. But in latch current in store for time in a temporary memory for some timeConcerning thyristors, according to the paper Thyristors - Theory, Parameters and Applications from Jurek Budek (Bedfrod Applications Lab) Holding current is the minimum value of anode current required to maintain the Thyristor in the on-state. While Latching current is the minimum value of anode currentrequired to maintain the Thyristor in the on-state immediately after switching from the off-state to the on-state has occurred and the triggering signal has been removed. When not stated assume latching current to be 3 time holding current.

What is a holding relay?

Latching relays have no default position and remain in their last position when the drive current stops.

Define latching current in scr?

Latching Current is the minimum current needed on the gate to fire or trigger an SCR.

What is a latching circuit?

A latching circuit is a circuit with two stable states, which one can think of as 1 and 0, thereby being able to store one bit of information. In circuit diagrams, these are represented by cross-coupled NOR or NAND logic gates.

Why SCRs are connected in parallel?

When the load current exceeds the SCR current rating, SCRs are connected in parallel to share the load current. Further the holding currents of the devices should not be so much different that at reduced load current one of the device gets turned-off because of fall of current through it blow its holding current value.
