Yes, the story of Mike the chicken is true. because some brain and nerve endings survived the Axe. it is possible for a chicken to live for quite awile without a head, though 18 months, it may be an exageration.
actually they stop living the instant yoi kill it but the chicken runs around for a few seconds till it realizes that it can't find his head because he got no eyes, the ax took them too so he lays down an dies. recent court findings reveal it is much more humane to simply break it's neck. this has been enforced in many states already an state inspectors say the floors in the slaughter houses are much less slippery.
Well as unbelievable as it may seem.

It can not live without a head. All of the movement the chicken makes after having the head severed is from nerves reacting.
^above answer is not COMPLETELY true^ Chickens CAN live without a head, but only for a few months. In order for them TO live, headless, yoü must chop off their head right above the medulla oblongata. The medulla oblongata controls breathing and heartbeats to keep the chicken alive. That means if the medulla oblongata and spinal cord are intact, your chicken will just lose blood instead of a life.
Only a few minutes because it would 'bleed out' and there is no brain function.
I think it was something like 18 months.
Yes.
A chicken will continue to grow until they are about 18 months old. They reach their full height at about 6 months of age but will still add weight and bulk until they are 18 months old.
It will normally die. However, it can flop around for awhile because the nerves are still triggering its muscles. Removing the head from chickens or other higher-order animals causes them to die. Insects such as cockroaches are less dependent on their brains for metabolic activities, and can live for days or even weeks. If you cut off the chicken's head completely then it will obviously die. But sometimes people just cut off the chicken's head where the upper brain is. If the brain stem (near the neck) is left intact, the chicken could remain alive, because the brain stem basically controls the autonomic and instinctive functions, such as pumping blood and breathing. In 1945, one famous rooster survived for 18 months without most of its head.
It depends on how they are raised. Free range-6 months caged-about 8 months
