How long is chocolate milk good after the sell by date?

There are so many variables in this question that it is difficult to answer. For example, someone living in a hot climate (like Florida or California) might find that their milk expires before the use by date as the process of opening and closing the refrigerator door lets in hot bursts of air. These frequent bursts of warm air contribute to a faster rate of product deterioration as food should be kept below 2 degrees celsius (36F) to stay fresh longer.

Another variable is transportation. If milk does not last beyond the sell by date, it was probably subjected to changes in temperature before it was sold.

The very best gauge of telling whether your milk is still okay to drink, is by smelling it. Good milk should barely smell, and if it does smell it should smell sweet. Usually, the stronger the smell the older the milk is. As soon as it starts to get chunky, it is old and should be discarded.
