It takes 4 years to become a CNM and about 2.5 years to become a Direct-entry midwife. You need a High school Diploma or GED, Demonstrate proficiency in the English language, Complete 45 quarter credits or 27 semester credits of college coursework with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better, complete an approved Labor Support Course. You will also need at least one year of high school or 3 college level credits in Biology and 3 college level credits for English as well as 5 college level credits in Human Anatomy and Psysiology which is usually a 2 quarter course. Also you will need 3 college level credits in Math along with 5 college level credits in Microbiology and last but not least 5 college level credits in Social Science. Most nurse midwifery programs require that the students receive a Bachelor's degree in nursing and a master's degree in midwifery.

A Certified Nurse Midwife has to be a Registered Nurse first, usually with a Bachelor's degree, that takes 4 years. Most CNM programs today are Master's programs that take 1-2 years.
