While it would certainly help, there is no requirement for college education to become an avionic technician. There are trade schools, and the military, where one can learn to work on avionics.
Most medical technicians go for two years (AA degree) or longer, depending on the specialty of their chosen field. Some medical colleges accelerate the two year program into one year or nine months ... a very fast paced education, but highly concentrated in a good way.
