The biometric appointment is usually 1 to 2 months after sending in the adjustment of status forums after you are married in the USA. The work permit usually comes 2 to 3 months after the biometric. The whole process can take 3 to 6 months. It always just depends on so many unknown government variables.

Added:

I got my biometrics appointment within a month. My Interview was schedule just 3 months after filing the adjustment of status paper work. -- Chicago 2009.

Just because you marry a legal citizen, it does not make you a leagal citizen. When I married my husband who was a legal alien he still had to go through the same channels to become a legal US citizen and he had to be sworn in.

After marrying a US citizen if you were given the conditional status valid for 2 years you can apply for green card 90 days before conditional status expires. If you are still married and living with the same US citizenship after three years of getting the green card you are eligible to apply for US citizenship provided you are fully eligible.

When you file your green card application you can file form Form I-765, "Application for Employment Authorization": if the alien spouse does not have a work visa (for example an H1B visa), this form can be used to request employment authorization card.

You should get the EAD card in within 90 days.

Im not sure if every case works the same. But I do know that It will all depend on how did you enter the U.S

If you came ilegally, the process will take a long time ( we are talking about years)

but If not, it takes aproximately 3 or 4 months to get the papers that allow you to work and in another 2 or 3 months you should receive the documents that allow you to travel overseas (residency) I guess it will be call..

If you entered the country illegally over 20 years ago how can you become a legal citizen without marrying?

You can be adopted by a US citizen. You can be sponsored by an immediate relative that is a US citizen or a permanent green card holder. Marrying a U.S. citizen does not automatically confer citizenship or permanent resident status on the new spouse. Adoption is only allowed if the child is 16-years or younger has been certified an orphan by his or her country of origin and has been granted an IR4 visa for entrance into the United States. Contact the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services for information pertaining to the individual's specific circumstances or visit http://www.uscis.gov
