For the last century or so, most U.S. college majors have required 4 years of study. If you take an over- or underload of classes, your time will of course be shorter or longer. However unless you are very talented, taking an overload is generally not preferable to completing your work in the standard amount of time.

College courses are offered at the technician, technologist or associate level at 1, 2 or 3 years duration. A university bachelors degree is usually 4 years duration, and a masters degree, 5 or 6 years. A doctorate will take at least 6 years. Any of these will qualify you to work at some level of analytical, organic, physical or process chemistry.

3 years for a Bachelor's degree. Higher degrees (Master's, Doctor's) take an extra 3 to 6 years above this. Note that this depends partly on the country. In the US it's POSSIBLE to get a Bachelor's in three years, but it will probably require taking a fairly heavy load each semester along with summer courses. Four is much more typical and if you're trying for an BS in Education expect five (you probably won't be able to take any courses while you're student teaching other than the student teaching course itself).

AnswerThe time it takes to complete a PhD in Chemical Engineering may vary and be particular to the college or university enrolled in and the students approach to it. As a general rule of thumb, the degree would require approximately 60 credits minus the dissertation. How long it would take to complete the degree may vary according to each individual's circumstances and would include at least some of the following indicators:

  • Is the student full-time or part-time?
  • How many credits are taken each semester?
  • How long will take the student to finish the dissertation?
  • Will the dissertation require further research and enhancements?
Thus, you can see there are a number of factors to consider. However, if there is a general number of years to complete the degree, we might say on the average of four years or more - depending. The above is particular to an individual starting a PhD program. It does not include all the course work leading to the PhD program of study.Viper1
