It takes 6 years for a Master's degree if you include the 4 years getting a Bachelors. I believe you would go for an MSW (Master's in Social Work) but there may be other professional qualifications you might need. New Post Below: I have a Master's in Counseling Psychology (specialty School Counseling), which is different from the MSW. It took me four years to complete going part-time (includes one full year of field experience). MS Counseling Psychology prepares one for a career in counseling/psychotherapy--the focus is on counseling techniques/approaches, and one specializes in a select area (i.e., School Counseling, Community Counseling, Career Counseling, etc.). It takes a "wellness" approach to helping the client, which means that the counselor assumes the client ultimately has the power to help themselves (as the client base tends to struggle with less-severe psychopathology). The MSW degree includes some counseling courses; however, the bulk of the curriculum centers on utilizing community resources to help those who may not have the power to help themselves (in essence, you serve as the client's advocate). Sorry for being long-winded; I realize that this is probably more info than you had asked for.... -Eileen

A bachelors is designed as a four year program of study as a full-time student and provided the student takes the degree as prescribed by the college or university. The masters can take approximately two to three additional years depending on the program of study, and the course load carried each semester.

After completion of the Bachelors degree, it can take approximately two to three years for the Masters, and two to three years for the PhD. However, the length of time can vary according to how an individual approaches each degree. In others words, some graduate programs differ in the amount of credits needed to complete the degree. Also, is the student taking the program of study part-time or full-time. Is the student successful in passing each course or is there a need to repeat a course. That is why the above time-line is an approximation.

It depends on the specific specialty. The masters can take approximately two to three years depending on the credit load carried per semester. There are some programs of study that can take longer, such as a masters in school psychology.

A bachelor's degree in most areas can require between 120 to 128 college credits particular to a specific program of study. This would be based on a college or university that operates on a regular two semester academic year which is the most common. For institutions that operate on a tri-semester or quarter-semester it would be quite different. That being said, the Bachelor's degree - in most cases - is designed as a four year program of study, provided the student is full-time and follows their chosen program of study as prescribed by the college or university, and also provided the individual does not require prerequisite or developmental coursework as a result of basic skills testing. The minimum credit load for a full-time student is no less than 12 credits per semester. However, to complete the degree within the four years, a credit load of approximately 15 to 18 credits is recommended. For individuals who work or who have other responsibilities that would prohibit them from attending full-time, completion of the degree may take twice as long. Still, some of this time can be cut down by attending summer sessions and/or interim sessions. In addition, the bachelors and associate degrees are referred to as undergraduate degrees while the masters and doctorate degrees referred to as graduate degrees.

It depends on what kind of counseling. A masters degree can be anywhere from two to four years depending on the program of study, and how much of a course load the student is carrying.
