Stone henge was probably an astronomical observatory. The Egyptians toyed with celestial architecture some 6000 years ago. Most likely the first people to gaze in wonder at the moon and Venus, Mars, and Jupiter thought about space.
The Greeks are the first to have made decent records of their spatial measurements. They knew the moon was 30 earth diameters away as early as 400 BCE. Eratosthenes measured the earth's circumference by 200 BCE.
After that, the study of space fell primarily to the Arabs, who invented the astrolab and excellent star charts.
Astronomy has probably been around for as long as man has been able to look up at the sky and wonder about the stars. This means that astronomy, the study of the heavens and outer space, predates recorded history. Certainly this does not mean astronomy was understood back then as it is now, but some things are remarkably the same. And the evidence of this is all around us if we but choose to see it for what it is. Structures erected by ancient peoples appear to conform to regularities that appear in the movement of the heavens. This is true across a variety of peoples, ages and geographic locations around the world. In that light, astronomy has been with us for thousands of years. And even now we look at some of these ancient monuments to man's ingenuity and fail to completely understand even a fraction of what is being said by the structures. We can't fathom the full purpose or even the ideas embraced by the people and expressed in their constructs. And in many cases, peoples built them and then these people disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only the monuments for us to wonder at.
It's impossible to know the answer to this. Evidence of space studies date back thousands of years, before telescopes were even invented. The Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Babylonians and Ancient Greeks all studied space.
As far as we can tell, mankind has been studying the stars/space for over 6,500 years. Possibly longer.
The first time humans long, long ago looked at the sky.
Astronomy has been around for a long time but it was only beginning to be correct during the Renaissance where they realised that all the planets revolve around the sun.
A s a great many people do so, it is safe to assume they should.
