You need to get the necessary knowledge, and then you need to find someone to hire you. There are many schools offering such classes. Do your research, be sure the one you choose is on the up and up. If you're one of the people who learned all the necessary stuff on your own, and there are some of those out there..then you just need to find someone to hire you. I would say that a paid-for course of study would take between a year and two years, depending on the diploma offered. If you can get, for example, the Microsoft courses offered and learn them on your own, and pass the certification tests, you might be able to do it faster, or slower, depending on your ability and motivation. The most important lesson to learn before you begin is that people are the most important part of an IT job or career. Meet people, ask questions, learn all you can. Jobs in the IT industry are not clear cut and stable. They change rapidly, and you need to study and stay on top of things. "Flexibility" is crucial. In other words, you need to be able to do what you are asked, whether it's your job title or not. Study hard, learn lots and have fun. It beats digging ditches.

This depends on what kind of computer technician you wish to be and which college you wish to attend. I recommend TSTC (Texas State Technical College). It is a 2 year college and most of the teachers have or had jobs in the field that they are teaching.
