2 claws
Land hermit crabs have 2 claws. The larger claw is used for defense and to cover the hole opening of their shell for protection. It is also used to assist with climbing and the one they normally hold on with. It also breaks chunks of food off for easier eating which is then broken again with the smaller claw and passed to the mouth. The smaller claw is mainly used to break food for eating.

All crabs have ten legs.

Hermit crabs have four pairs of walking legs, and two pincer legs, totalling ten in all.

Hermit crabs, however, are not true crabs, and are more closely related to insects than to crabs.

How can tell hermit crabs from male to female?

If you look at the underside of your crab, on it's last pair of walking legs under it's abdomen, a female will have a dot on each side, these dots are called nonporous. They are what determines whether or not you have a female or a male crab. its hard to tell if your hermit crab is a male or female when there in their shell the girls are most likely to be smaller in size than the male but never ever pull your hermit crab out of its shell to see if its a male or a female they probably would like to be pulled in half then give up its home

When is a hermit crab ready for a bigger shell?

Hermit Crab, a land- or water-dwelling crustacean. Unlike true crabs, hermit crabs have soft, vulnerable abdomens. For protection from predators, many hermit crabs seek out abandoned shells, usually snail shells. When a hermit crab finds one of the proper size, it pulls itself inside, leaving several legs and its head outside the shell. (A hermit crab has five pairs of legs, but not all of them are fully developed.) A hermit crab carries the shell wherever it goes. When it outgrows its shell, it switches to a larger one. Most adult hermit crabs are from 1/2 inch (13 mm) to 4 3/4 inches (121 mm) long. Living on the seashore, in tidepools, and on the sea bottom in deeper water, hermit crabs scavenge their food.

How do you know if your hermit crab is a male or female?

Female hermit crabs have gonopores on their second set of walking legs, whereas male hermit crabs do not have gonopores at all. You can see pictures to illustrate this by clicking on the related link, below. You may be able to see whether your hermit crab has gonopores during or after it's weekly bath. You could also try to see by gently placing the crab inside a clear glass bowl and, as the crab tries to climb the slippery surface, you may be able to view the second pair of walking legs. However, many hermit crabs are reluctant to come far enough out of their shells for you to tell whether they have gonopores or not. Some may never let you see. You should not try holding the crab above a table and making it reach out as your crab can easily hurt itself by doing this. You must be very patient and must never try to force them to come out of their shell. Pulling on the crab can seriously harm, or even kill, the crab because it will hold so tightly to the shell to try and protect itself that you could tear it apart.Per #6 of WikiAnswers Copyright Violation and Plagiarism Policy cited from Crab Street Journal.com
