very difficult to answer. Ireland was neutral in ww2 but many Irish fought and died in the british and u.s. armed forces. i have heard estimates of 5,000 to 20,000 but there is no easy figure

In 1995 Irish Prime Minister John Bruton claimed at least 10,000 Irish were killed serving in the British or Commonwealth armed forces. All were volunteers.

The figure of 1000 dead is often ascribed to the dead during the bombing raids on Belfast (which, although actually part of the United Kingdom, is of course still in Ireland).

Many people from Northern Ireland enlisted in the British Forces. The Irish Republic was officially neutral in World War II; although techically still a British Dominion state, and the popualtion of Ireland generally favoured the Allied cause more than that of the Axis. However Anti-British sentiments wer pretty high as well. Some people from the Irish Republic independently volunteered for either the British, American or Canadian armies. Numbers on Irish casulties in the war are vague since those who fought did not fight in Irish uniform or under Irish flag.
