The following US Presidents were either shot and killed, shot and lived, or shot at but missed. Many US Presidents were elected as old war heroes, whether the Revolutionary War, Civil War, the World Wars, etc. Most were directly involved in combat.

  • President George Washington served in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War. After, he became the commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Due to his experience in war, he was most definitely shot at many times.
  • President James Monroe also played a part in the Revolutionary War, where he was shot in the shoulder at the Battle of Trenton. He recovered from his injury.
  • President Andrew Jackson was the first sitting president to be shot at. While walking out of the Capitol building, a disgruntled Richard Lawrence appeared and shot at Jackson twice from two different revolvers, both missing him. He was also prominent in the War of 1812 and the victory at New Orleans.
  • President Zachary Taylor fought in various conflicts pre-Civil War, most notably battles in the Mexican-American War.
  • President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth. It happened on April 14, 1865, while he and his wife were watching the play, Our American Cousin. He did not survive from his injuries.
  • President Rutherford B. Hayes fought in the Civil War and was wounded many times and frequently had horses shot from under him.
  • President James Garfield was about to leave Washington to attend the twenty-fifth reunion of his class at Williams College. As Garfield walked through the reception room in the railroad station, a stranger fired two pistol shots at him. The assassin was Charles J. Guiteau and the date was July 2, 1881.
  • President William McKinley gave a speech at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 5, 1901. The next day, while attending a reception, an anarchist named Leon F. Czolgosz went to shake hands with McKinley. Czolgosz fired two bullets at the President with a revolver concealed by a handkerchief in his right hand. An ambulance rushed President McKinley to the hospital for emergency surgery. McKinley seemed to be recovering for a while, but he died on September 14, 1901.
  • President Theodore Roosevelt was shot in the chest by John Schrank, only after the bullet passed through his eyeglass case and speech while he was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Because it was a non-life threatening injury, he proceeded to deliver his speech without proper medical attention. The bullet remained lodged in his chest for the rest of his life.
  • President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, while on a reelection campaign trip. As Kennedy and his wife rode through the streets of Dallas, Texas (in an open car), around 12:30 PM (CST), a reported three shots rang out and the President slumped over. He was hit in the neck and head. He died at 1:00 PM (CST). His assassin was Lee Harvey Oswald.
  • President Ronald Reagan was shot in chest in March of 1981, but surgeons removed the bullet and he made a full recovery. The man who tried to assassinate the President was John W. Hinckley, Jr.
  • President George H.W. Bush was shot down while a pilot during World War 2.

A number of Presidents have been shot, four fatally.

  • Abraham Lincoln was shot in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth
  • James A. Garfield was shot in 1881 by Charles Guiteau
  • William McKinley was shot in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz
  • John F. Kennedy was shot in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald.

In addition, there were several other assassination attempts.

  • Andrew Jackson had an assassination attempt in 1835 when he was shot at twice by Richard Lawrence. Jackson also had bullet wounds from duels in his younger days, including one in 1806 in which he killed Charles Dickinson.
  • Theodore Roosevelt, then an ex-President, was shot in 1912 while running for a third term. The bullet caused only a minor wound and was never removed.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt was shot at by Giuseppe Zangara in Chicago, IL in 1933, the shot killing Chicago mayor Anton Cermak.
  • Harry Truman was the target of an armed attack by Puerto Rican nationalists in 1950. One gunman and one guard were killed.
  • Gerald Ford had two attempts on his life 17 days apart in 1975, both by women. Squeaky Fromme, a member of the Manson cult, aimed at him but did not get off a shot. One shot was fired at him by Sara Jane Moore, but she missed.
  • Ronald Reagan was shot at by John Hinckley, Jr. on March 30, 1981 and wounded by a ricochet. Press secretary James Brady was hit and paralyzed.
  • Bill Clinton's term was marked by two attacks on the White House in 1994: one by a small aircraft that crashed on the grounds, and another when a man sprayed 29 shots from a rifle at the building.
  • George W. Bush was in the White House in 2001 when a man fired at the residence from the fence outside. Four years later, in 2005, a hand grenade was lobbed at the President in Tbilisi, Georgia. It did not explode.
