What is Certified-mail?

Certified mail is a way to mail a letter and receive a tracking number that allows you to know when it was delivered. For an additional fee you may also request a signed delivery slip from the recipient which allows you to prove that they got the letter. This is very helpful when the person is trying to avoid you. The post office makes two attempts and documents notification to that person that they have this letter for them. The third time the post man can't deliver they get a notice that the letter is at the post office waiting for them to pick it up. If the person has a post office box they still get this notice and have to sign for it. You can even request that the person show id to get it. If the post office is unable to deliver certified mail, it is returned unopened to the original sender, as further proof and record of the attempts to send it. In many court cases, the mere fact that a person has been sent a certified letter to their last known address is sufficient proof that they have been "officially notified" of whatever was in the letter.

What is certified mail?

A certified letter is guaranteed by the postal service to be delivered to the recipient. A form is filled out at the post office that contains the name of the sender and the person/place where the letter is sent. The sender receives a receipt and can request they be notified when delivery is made. When delivery is made the a person must sign for accepting the mail. The cost is more than ordinary postage, but it gives the sender proof of having sent the material. Actually the letter is not guaranteed to be delivered to the recipient if it is sent via certfied mail. Anyone who answers the door at the address can sign for the letter if it is not sent via restricted mail, which can only be signed by the recipient or I believe anyone who can produce legal papers of guardianship of said recipient. This method of mailing is also more expensive by several dollars (about 5, I think give or take).

What happens if you don't sign for delivery of a certified letter?

Certified Mail is a special service started in 1955 by the US Postal Service that gives the sender proof of mailing and delivery. If the intended receiver does not sign the receipt of deliver, then he will not receive that letter. Any person can sign for the letter, so if the intended receiver is not at home, or not available to pick it up at the post office, someone else can do it for him, as long as they sign the reciept taking responsibility for the letter.

Why would a doctor's office send you a certified letter?

A doctor's office would send you a certified letter for the same reason anyone else sends you one. It considers the contents important and wants to make sure you receive the message. You may send a letter to someone and never get a reply. You have no idea if that person ever received the message. A certified letter with a return receipt assures the sender that the letter was received. There could be a number of valid reasons for sending such a letter. It could concern an overdue bill. If you don't pay your bill, we will turn it over to a collection agency! It could concern a need to review some tests with you. You may not have responded to a regular letter and the certified letter will cause the post office to send the doctor a change of address. A certified letter basically proves that certain paperwork has been done. It is for the Doctor's benefit, not your benefit.
