You are allowed to carry 2 items on board the aircraft. Your purse, computer bag, brief case, pillow, shopping bag, diaper bag etc counts as one and it must fit under the seat in front of you, and one that fits inside the overhead bin. Airlines have maximum sizes for what can go in the overhead bins, and these can vary from airline to airline.

More information, which is general and subject to change:

You are allowed to check 1 piece that weighs 50 lb or less free of charge on most, but not all, major airlines. Southwest still allows 2 pieces, but has lowered their weight limit from 70 lb each to 50lb each. International carriers may differ. Most airlines have reduced international weight limits from 70 lb down to 50 lb as well. As the others have said, check with the airline you have booked your flight through. If your bags are over weight you will be charge $25 for each piece over weight from 50-70 lb. And anything over is $50-100 and up depending on how heavy. There are restrictions on dementions as well if you are not just checking normal luggage. Baby items such as strollers, car seats and pack and plays are all exempt from the total count.

Gate checking your items is no longer an option. Due to security reasons, all checked items must be screened for explosives, so if you ask to gate check an item, you will be sent back to the ticket counter, unless its a stroller. If the flight is full or an agent says your carry on it too big, you will have to gate check the item and it will be sent to baggage claim. Just dont volunteer to gate check something unless the flight is full or you are told to.

Be warned also that most major airports have a one hour cut off on checking in. That means you are checked in and issued a boarding pass, not just arriving and getting in line. Make sure you allow plenty of time for that.

For domestic flights, you're allowed one carry-on bag for the overhead compartment (size requirements apply), and one smaller item (such as a purse, backpack or laptop case) that can be stowed under the seat.

Maximum of two(2) bags - one very small one, & one bag which has a maximum weight of 7kgs, or a maximum volume that can fit into the aircraft's overhead lockers which must still weigh 7kgs max.. The very small one can be a purse, shoulderbag, laptop, or a duty freebag bought from the airport..

You can take as many bags as you want, but the total weight has to be under a certain limit (check with your airline). There are also restrictions on your hand luggage, which again you should check with your airline.

You are also allowed to carry on any medical device such as a C-Pap machine. The device must have a label affixed to it that specifically states "Medical Device" in order to qualify. The C-Pap machine does not count as one of the two allowed carry on items. They have to allow qualified Medical Devices to be carried on board, but they will still have to be screened by the TSA agents.

You may take up to three, maybe four bags total, but maybe only two carry-ons.
