That answer differs from country to country. The average Catholic family in the USA is not statistically much larger than the American national average. This trend highlights the fact that many American Catholics are ignoring the Pope's edicts on birth control and many more are now practicing the church-sanction family planning practices which includes ovulation monitoring (avoiding sex during ovulation periods). In many other nations, the average family size for Catholics can run between 4 and 7 children.
7 or 8. Infant mortality was very high. The number of children to survive the first five years was pretty low, so families "overbooked" children, knowing that most of them would die. This is from CDC.gov, a reliable source. 25% of all children who were born died before their first birthday. There were epidemics of cholera, and the flu that took out entire towns. There were scarlet fever epidemics, measles, etc. Entire families perished because of common diseases that we just go to a doctor for today. There was no knowledge of nutrition and vitamins, so people died because they ate poorly, or nothing but corn meal mush or meat. There was no knowledge of cleaning hands (doctors did not wash their hands before operating on a person, spreading germs.) There were no antibiotics. There were open sewers in towns. The average person died at 33 to 45 years old, Children were worked to death in factories-- And there were tons of accidents from people running around with guns and knives. There were no social services, so if you were an orphan and no one took you in, you died in a "work farm" if lucky, or on the streets begging. It was no picnic back then. I'd rather be alive today, thanks.
According to the Census in 2000, the average size of an American family is 3.14 as it was found that most families have 3 children but were likely to go for a third child. So the average American has 2 siblings.
The average family has 2 children, but in the family there is a average of 4 people.
with only one couple, no halfs or steps the highest, I think, is 17.
