Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennslvania and Virginia can continue to call themselves commonwealths for as long as they choose, but the US Constitution defines them as states. There are therefore 50 States in the US.

There are many countries but Alaska and Hawaii are not among them. They are both states within the United States of America. Both achieve recognition as a part of the Union and not as separate entities in the sphere of International Government.
