Six days, including the earth and all living things (Genesis ch.1). For the earth itself, without living things, one day or less (ibid).

Another Thought:

Unsure as Genesis 1 is sometimes translates 'tohu and bohu' as formless and empty or without form and void literally meaning 'chaotic and in confusion.' But the Scripture clearly says that is not how God creates - see Isaiah 45:18. Also, in Job 38:4-7 we are told the angels shouted for joy at the sight of the Creation - Earth included. So something seems to be missing here in the Genesis 1 account especially when one reads and notes that the planet is already in existence but in total darkness and under water.

Consider then the Psalm 104:30 which states a 'renewal' of the Earth. So this makes it appear that the original Creation occurred previous to the Genesis account and something happened to 'ruin' it and leaving it in a chaotic state. Could it have something to do with Isaiah 14:12-15; Ezekiel 28:14-17 and the fall of the Adversary? Food for thought...

Psalm 104:30Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

30 If you send out your breath, they are created,

and you renew the face of the earth.

6 days on the seventh god rested.

Genesis 1:31 (King James Version)31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 2:1-3 (King James Version)1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

It must be remembered that the Genesis creation account was originally written as one continuous record, with no numbered verses as we have today. The account of the creation of the world in 6 days each of 24 hours ends at 2v4a and the second complimentary account which deals specifically with the creation of man begins there.

There has been mush learned discussion about the meaning of yom in Genesis 1 since it can mean an indefinite period of time such as 'in my day we didn't do things that way.' However, when yom is coupled with 'evening and morning' it can only mean a day of 24 hours as we know it today. Even those who do not wish to believe that God created the world in 6 24 hour days acknowledge that this is what the Hebrew says.

Yet, its been known for many decades if not centuries, that the 24hr day has not been a 24hr day for a long long time.

Its totally possible for the 6 day creation to have taken more than the 6days in terms of todays timekeeping.

Fact is, that in centurires past, the day was considered only 12 hours per night was not included in many calcuations per no work being done at night by farmers and etc. Per this alone a lot of socalled calcuations ignore this and other factors that definitely at least double the 'clocktime' while the noted 6day comment is valid, the actually amt of modern time value will be different than 6x24x7.

It took god six days to create heaven and earth and all on it.

Another view:The Bible doesn't say.

Genesis 1:1 says that 'In the beginning' God created the heavens and the earth', but it never says how long ago "the beginning" was, or how long it took to form 'the heavens and earth'. The heavens and the earth were created long ago, perhaps millions of years. The Bible doesn't say.

Now the 6 'creative days' spoken of from that point on, are the segments of time it took God to prepare the already existing earth for life and put life on it.

A few things to remember are:

*2 Peter 3:8 indicates that God views time differently than we do.

*And the term "day" can mean different things.

IF I say: 'In 1492, back in Columbus' day, they sailed the ocean blue', I don't mean the 24 hours when Columbus lived...I mean back in the time period where Columbus lived.

According to Bible chronology, man was created about the year 4026 BCE (that's over 6000 years ago). Each day or 'period' began and ended completely (Genesis 1:31). Man was created on the '6th day', and that period ended.

After that, on the 'seventh day', God "rested"(Genesis 2:2)

and that "rest" day had not ended when the apostles were on earth, 4000 years later. God's rest day was still continuing (Hebrews 4:1-11) as Paul indicated when he said that they could still 'enter into God's rest'.

And today, There's no indication that that 'day' has ended.

We are still in the 7th day. God's rest period.

If we assume the other 'six days' were the same length as the 7th....it gives you an idea how long the creative days were. Not 24 hours, but creative 'periods' of thousands of years each, which makes sense on several levels.

The opening words of Genesis tell us: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) Do these words of Genesis say that this happened about ten thousand years ago? No, it gives no time period. "The beginning" could therefore have been billions of years ago.

However, right at "the beginning," the Bible puts an intelligent being, the Creator, in control of the creative work. Although many scientists are uncomfortable with this idea, it harmonizes with the conclusions of astronomers that the universe did have a beginning, that it is very well ordered, and that it is governed by definite laws. An orderly arrangement based on law can come only from an intelligent mind. While science has explained many of these laws to us, Genesis alone introduces us to the Lawgiver.

The account in Genesis then goes on to outline the famous six "days" of creation. These days, though, were not the time during which the material of the earth and the universe was created. That had already happened "in the beginning." The six days of creation were, rather, the periods of time during which the primordial, inhospitable earth was slowly made fit for habitation.

Was each one of those six days a literal 24-hour day? That is not what Genesis says. The word "day" in the Hebrew language (the language in which Genesis was written) can mean long periods of time, even thousands of years. (Compare Psalm 90:4; Genesis 2:4.)

Six days of creation, and one of cessation.

Day by day, God created the universe and its contents (Genesis ch.1).God created the universe out of nothing (Exodus 20:11, Isaiah 40:28; Rashi commentary to Genesis 1:14; Maimonides' "Guide," 2:30).Note that the Torah, in describing the Creation, deliberately employs brevity and ellipsis, just as it does in many other topics. See the Talmud, Hagigah 11b.

  • On day 1: God created the universe in general, light, and this Earth. The light was not the same as that of the sun. Rather, it was light that God created before the sun, and which emanated from a point in space without any physical source; like what we might term a "white hole."
  • On day 2: God created the separation between the Earth and the upper atmosphere.
  • On day 3: God separated the continents from the oceans, and created plants.
  • On day 4: God created the sun, moon, and stars.
  • On day 5: God created birds and fish.
  • On day 6: God created animals and people.
  • On day 7: God ceased creating, thereby creating the concept of rest.

The Genesis creation account, if read carefully, is actually a renewal of the face of the already existing Earth for God's pinnacle creation - humankind. Quite clearly, the Scripture tells of the events happening on each of the 6 days beginning on Sunday - night/day periods of time. God established HIS Sabbath rest beginning on sunset Friday to sunset Saturday (the 7th day). During this time, humankind is to do no regular activities but rather ponder God's creation, study the Scripture and gather with similar minded individuals.
