Longitude is the east-west (right/left) measurement on amap. It goes from 180

degrees west to 0 (through Greenwich, London, UK) then to 180 degrees East.

180 degrees West or East is actually the same line - its in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

There are thus 360 lines of integer Longitude.

Latitude goes from the Equator - 0 degrees, North to the North Pole at 90 degrees north.

Or south to the South Pole at 90 degrees south.

There are thus 180 lines of integer latitude.

Technically, you'd have to say that the number of possible lines is actually infinite.

Since between any two lines you choose, no matter how close together they are,

you can always fit a bunch more in between them.

"How many lines on a globe ?" is a lot like asking "How many lengths on a ruler ?"

There are 180 degrees of longitude on both the east and west of the Prime Meridian. They add up to 360 degrees, however, the maximum number of degrees ends at 180 on a globe. The same applies for lines of latitude.

Longitude is measured in degrees, minutes and seconds starting from the

Prime Meridian which runs through Greenwich, England (O point of Longitude )

and proceeding 180 degrees East and West of the Prime, so all the way around

the Earth comprises 360 degrees of longitude. The International Date Line is

180 degrees Longitude and the point where East changes to West, or vice-versa.

If you were pick one longitude and mark every point on Earth that has it, you'd

have a line that joins the north and south poles.

For example, a Longitude of 32 degrees, 14 minutes, 30 seconds would put you

somewhere on a line between the poles that passes just off the Eastern coast

of the United States in the Atlantic. Locations East of the Prime are said to be

in the Eastern Hemisphere, those West in are in the Western Hemisphere.

Latitude is measured in degrees, minutes and seconds from the Equator to the

geographic North Pole and the South Pole. Each degree is 60 minutes, and those

minutes can be further refined into seconds to calculate precise positions on the

globe. The north and south poles are 90 degrees north/south of the equator,

respectively. For example, 45 degrees North Latitude would put you halfway to the

North Pole from the Equator, which is 0 degrees Latitude. The Arctic and Antarctic

Circles are the exact same latitude, but one is north of the equator and the other

is south of it.

Locations North of the Equator are said to be in the Northern Hemisphere, while

those South of it are in the Southern Hemisphere.

Coordinates on the globe are found by using both Latitude and Longitude - the Longitude places the point either East or West of the Prime Meridian, and the Latitude places it either North or South of the Equator.

Lines of longitude are measured from the 0º line which runs through Greenwich, London. They are increased going east and going west - so the line opposite the one through Greenwich is the 180º meridian. This means that there is a total of 360º of longitude. Lines of latitude are measured from 0º at the Equator, and are increased going north and south to a maximum of 90º at each pole. This means that there is a total of 180º of latitude.

Neat question. There are 180 degrees of latitude, and 360 degrees of longitude on the globe.

Think of latitude as defining the angle formed at the earth's center between the equatorial plane and a line drawn from the earth's center to any given point on the earth's surface, you for example. If you are at the equator, the parallel that defines the equatorial plane, then the angle is zero degrees. 90 degrees north defines the north pole. From the equator the degrees also advance southward until you reach 90 degrees south, the south pole. The total is 180 degrees, but doing it this way with zero degrees at the equator makes it easier to compare north and south latitudes.

The situation is similar with longitude. The Greenwich or prime meridian is zero degrees, and the continuation of this meridian beyond the poles is the defined location of the International Date Line, 180 degrees. Zero degrees and 180 degrees longitude are neither east nor west; they form the circle that separates east from west. Degrees of west longitude advance from the Greenwich meridian westward, toward the US. Degrees of east longitude advance from the Greenwich meridian eastward, toward Asia.

Latitude is defined from zero at the equator to 90° north at the north pole

and 90° south at the south pole, for a total of 180° of latitude on Earth.

Altitude describes a distance above the Earth's surface, and is measured

in units of length, such as feet or meters.

How many lines of east and west longitude make up the earth?

There are 180 degrees of east longitude and 180 degrees of west longitude, for a grand total of 360 degrees of longitude around the Earth. You're free to draw as few or as many 'lines' through that range on your map or globe as you feel will make you comfortable. There is no standard set of 'lines' that everone is required to use.

How many degrees are lines of longitude?

That depends on the scale of the map you use. On a small scale map (Remember, small scale = big area) longitude lines may be 10 or 15 degrees apart, while on a large scale map, they are probably one degree apart or even 15 minutes (one quarter degree) apart. We can measure them as finely as you want to.
