The adult human body only needs 4 hours of continuous sleep to fully rejuvenate ... A child need much more as much as 8 - 10 hours of sleep .. All people differ, some require more sleep than others. There is no set minimum or maximum. The human body is largely self regulating in this respect. When you are tired you sleep more. I have added a link supporting my previous answer that 7-8 hours is the accepted norm for the 'average' adult.
