According to Robert de Boron's Merlin there were 50 knights who sat at the Round Table in King Uther Pendragon's days.

The prose cyclic Arthurian tales mention the 150 Knights of the Round Table a number of times. This can be reconciled with Robert de Boron's account by assuming that the 50 knights when the table was set up were only intended as a beginning.

Remember also, as described in l'Éstoire del Graal(sometimes known as the Post-Vulgate Arthurian Cycle) that the table had ends, that is, it was ring-shaped but had two ends which did not meet, so that it formed a ring with one opening in it. This would allow for 75 knights on the outer side of the ring and 75 knights within the ring, with a passage into the middle of the table.

But this still seems a large amount.

This is especially so as according to the l'Éstoire del Graal there were three tables in Arthur's hall, all of them round: the Round Table itself, the Table of the Queen's Knights for chosen young knights, and the Table of the Less Worthy Knights for knights who were mostly no longer young but had not attained to a seat at the Round Table.

According to Laȝamon's Brut, the Round Table could sit 1600 men and more.

The Round Table is King Arthur's famed table in the Arthurian legend, around which he and his Knights congregate. As its name suggests, it has no head, implying that everyone who sits there has equal status. The table was first described in 1155 by Wace, who relied on previous depictions of Arthur's fabulous retinue. The symbolism of the Round Table developed over time; by the close of the 12th century it had come to represent the chivalric order associated with Arthur's court.
