At present (2013) the Periodic Table lists 118 elements in total.

A small number of these are not naturally occuring and have only been synthesised under laboratory conditions and only in exceptionally minute quantities. Elements consist of particles called atoms that consist of protons, electrons and optionally neutrons. Protons and neutrons are in the core of the atom, while electrons reside on different energy levels in a cloud around the core.

The atomic number of the element is determined by the number of protons in the core.

The lightest, simplest element in the universe is hydrogen-1, which consists of one proton and one electron.
There are also isotopes (different types) of hydrogen that have one or two neutrons in the core.

Since the number of protons defines the element, we can create a different element by adding more protons to the core. To make the new element an atom, we need to add a corresponding number of electrons, since protons are positively and electrons are negatively charged and an atom is always neutrally charged.

The more protons and neutrons you add to a core, the bigger it gets. When the core gets bigger, it also gets more unstable. This puts limits to what kind of elements occur in nature and also causes some elements to be radioactive.

The number of different elements that are proven to exist is 118, with the largest atom being number 118 (temporary name ununoctium), since element number 119 is yet to be found.

As of 2012, 55 hypothetical elements are being created.

How many known elements were there in 1789?

How many known elements were there in 1789? Short answer = more than 63 Longer answer = In the 1860's Mendeleev organized the 63 known elements. After this organization there was a boom of new elements being discovered (because we now knew what we were looking for). I'm sure further research wou (MORE)

How many known elements are there?

The current standard table contains 118 elements of which the transuranic elements were created artificially in a lab but traces of two of them have now been found in nature.

Chemical compounds chemical elements?

A good note is to remember a chemical substance is a pure form of matter. A chemical element is pure chemical substance consisting of once type of atom distinguished by it's atomic number (quantity of protons within an atom's nucleus.)Where as a chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consi (MORE)

Which elements form compounds known as organic chemicals?

Compound are the formation of carbon, the organic compoundcontaining C and H. Carbon forms many compounds because it has 4valence electrons, therefore four bonding sites. It can also formsingle, double or triple covalent bonds. for more google us asTatvachintan Pharmaceutical.

How many out of 108 elements known exist on earth?

There are 92 "natural elements, and 21 manmade elements, for a total of 113 elements - all of which exists on earth. You probably learned there are 108 elements, but in the past 2 decades, they have discovered (or made) 5 more. This only means that you probably went to highschool in the early 90s li (MORE)

What are the chemical elements..?

Note: A chemical substance is a pure form of matter. A chemical element is a pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom distinguished by its atomic number (the quantity of protons in a nucleus.)

How many elements are known to man kind?

There are 92 elements that exist in nature*. Every heavier element has decayed before our time. Of course, there are more elements in the periodic table, but they are all synthetic elements-they were made in a laboratory. How many chemical elements and chemical compounds are there?

There are 118 chemical elements, give or take, as the heaviest are extremely unstable and difficult to synthesize and identify. As for chemical compounds, there are many millions of them, with tens of thousands of new ones being synthesized each year.

Of the 111 known elements how many are naturally occurring?

Of the first 92 elements in the periodic table, only 90 are found in nature. The two "holes" belong to the elements with atomic numbers 43 (technetium, Tc) and 61 (promethium, Pm). These two elements have only radioactive varieties (isotopes), all of which decay away in relatively short times on a g (MORE)
