Vincent Van Gogh painted 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. His best works were done near the end of his life (committed suicide).
Van Gogh suffered many bouts of depression and after a breakdown he cut off his left ear during a seizure Dec. 24, 1888. Over 150 psychiatrists tried to label his depressive state and 30 different diagnoses were given:
It has been said that the psychiatrists thought Absinthe was the cause of yellow vision and thus, that's why Van Gogh used so many yellows in his paintings. There were suspicions in the future when scientists thought because the paint had lead in it that Van Gogh suffered from lead poisoning causing him to see halo effects and thus many of Van Gogh's works had a halo effect to them.
It has also been suggested that Van Gogh suffered from the brain disorder, Hypergraphia. The disorder causes a near constant overwhelming urge to write and is associated with epilepsy or mania.
Vincent van Gogh made or created 864 paintings between November 1881 and July 1890 and made 1037 drawings and sketches. He also made 150 aquarells/water colours. and his graphic works totals 10. He wrote 874 letters that have been found and in his letters he made 133 sketches He sold one painting called "the Red vineyard" to a Belgian lady artist called Anna Boch for 400 French francs just a few months before he died. His letters were mostly written to his brother Theo and his sister Wil.
