Vincent Van Gogh painted 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. His best works were done near the end of his life (committed suicide).

Van Gogh suffered many bouts of depression and after a breakdown he cut off his left ear during a seizure Dec. 24, 1888. Over 150 psychiatrists tried to label his depressive state and 30 different diagnoses were given:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar
  • Syphilis
  • Temporal lobe epilepsy
  • Acute intermittent Porphyria
  • Insomnia
  • Addicted to Absinthe (alcohol.)

It has been said that the psychiatrists thought Absinthe was the cause of yellow vision and thus, that's why Van Gogh used so many yellows in his paintings. There were suspicions in the future when scientists thought because the paint had lead in it that Van Gogh suffered from lead poisoning causing him to see halo effects and thus many of Van Gogh's works had a halo effect to them.

It has also been suggested that Van Gogh suffered from the brain disorder, Hypergraphia. The disorder causes a near constant overwhelming urge to write and is associated with epilepsy or mania.
