There were twelve deciples who always followed Jesus. But there were others also who followed him sometimes . Like Mary Magdalene, and Mary, Martha and Lazarus of Bethany. These were close followers, but in addition to these there were the '72' whom Jesus sent out to outlying villages to tell the people that he was on his way. Add to these the many many people who came to hear him and also to be healed (Mark tells us that there were 4000 men on one occasion, and on another 5000 men - not counting the women and children) and you can see that Jesus had many many followers and was well-known in the area as a miracle worker and preacher.
It's really impossible to know the number of people who were helped by Jesus during his ministry, but The Bible introduces us to several where Jesus used miracles to:
1. cure illnesses (Matthew 8:16; 9:35; 12:13+15, 5:25-29; 10:46-52)(Luke 17:11-19)(John 9:1-7) (Mark 1:29-31)(Luke 6:17)
2. raise the dead (Luke 7:11-15)(John 11:1-4, 15, 40-44)
3. build the faith of his followers (Mark 4:39)(John 2:1-11)
Even in death, Jesus helped people. One of the biggest faith-builders in the Bible, was the miracle that Godperformed by resurrecting Christ from the dead, helping many, down to this day, have faith in the resurrection of their dead loved ones (1Corinthians 15:3-7; Acts 2:32)(Acts 24:15)((John 5:28)(John 11:25)
Beyond the thousands who experienced the things recorded above, the Bible also says: " . . .There are, in fact, many other things also which Jesus did, which, if ever they were written in full detail, I suppose, the world itself could not contain the scrolls written."(John 21:25)(John 20:30)
Some rough estimates over the years from other sources:
10,000 years ago: -- 5 million.
Time of Jesus: -- 50 million
1650: -- 500 million.
From here on it starts accelerating faster
1800: -- 1 billion.
1927: -- 2 billion
1960: -- 3 billion
1975: -- 4 billion
1990: -- 5 billion
1999: -- 6 billion
now; 2012: -- over 7 billion
2025: -- projected to be 8 billion
2043: -- projected to be 9 billion
2050: -- estimated to be approx 10 billion
(The projections are of course based on the accelerated rate; baring any unforeseen occurrences; ie Judgment Day which Jesus fortold.)
A lot of people followed him then, and even more follow him now.
It was mainly the 12 disciples. That followed him during his travels.
