Official figures suggest that there are 44,522,000 Christians in the UK, or 71.8 % of the population. However not all these are regular (weekly) churchgoers although the majority attend church either on special occaions or more frequently than that.

It is recorded that 33% of the world's religious adherents are Christians.

However, the number appears to be elusive, possibly because most information of this kind is given on a national census. Otherwise, people tend not to record what their belief system is.

Many people are born christian but many people become christian when there older because of personal reasons so every minute hour day someone new becomes christian or is born christian already

Answer:While the number of Christians is hard to tell, many claim to be so. However, to become a Christian Biblically, a person needs to reckon that he is a sinner and are not worthy of God's glory: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23. We should all pay the penalty for sin by eternal death: "For the wages of sin is death;" yet God wishes to give us forgiveness and eternal life: "but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8. Christ paid the pric on the Cross for our sins.

In response to this, if we trust in Christ as our Savior from sin's penalty, is that we gain forgiveness and eternal life, becoming a Christian. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9 & 10. Verse 13 says: "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."

The sad thing is that many would say they are Christian because they go to church, were brought up in a church, or think that they are good enough. Jesus said: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matthew 7:21-23.

We need to truly believe in Christ and all He did to be saved, to be a true Christian: "Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent." John 6:29. In verse 47 He says: "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life." Without true belief in Christ, one cnnot be a Christian.

  • In the 2001 national census of the United Kingdom, 71.6 per cent of the national population identified as Christian. However, only 33 per cent identified as 'religious', leaving open the possibility that many who identified as Christian did so for cultural reasons or because they believe a religious belief to be expected.
  • Then in the 2011 census, 59.5 per cent of the population of England and Wales stated they were Christian, while 53.8 per cent of the population of Scotland stated they were Christian.
  • The British Social Attitudes Survey of 2014 found that 17 per cent of Britons identified as Anglican and a further 8 per cent were Catholic in 2014. This proportion is surprisingly low and should be accepted with care. The 2016 census will be a more accurate indicator of the trend.
