Atheism is a growing wordview in China, as it is in the Western world, but statistics are not really available. Just as Westerners often describe themselves as Christian for cultural reasons, although they do not really hold religious beliefs, so also Chinese people often describe themselves as Buddhists for cultural reasons, although they do not really hold religious beliefs. Nevertheless, most Chinese are respectful of Buddhists monks and appear to hold at least some religious beliefs.
