Per US Department of Labor - Bureau of labor statistics
see : http://www.bls.gov
as of Oct 2007 : Raw data, not seasonally adjusted.
Out of total US population of 232,715,000
of which 153,516,000 are in labor force (= working & looking for work)
of which 146,743,000 are actually working.
My guess is that these numbers do not include illegal alien workers, or
workers that work as independent contractors.
According to the US BoLS site, in 2008, 120,589,850 are employed out of an estimated 330,000,000 citizens. Statistics for 2009 are not yet complete. However, unemployment increased from 4.2%, in '07' to 9.8% as of sept, 2009.
The number of unemployed increased by 787,000 in May to 14.5 million unemployed people or 9.4 percent of the workers. These are the Government's figures would mean that there are about 155,000,000 people that work for a living and according to Wikipedia in June 2009 there were 306,000,000 people living in the United States. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm
