In the UK 12 points will do it!

In the US it depends on the state

for example:

Florida: 322.28 excerpt provides

(a) When a licensee accumulates 12 points within a 12-month period, the period of suspension shall be for not more than 30 days.

(b) When a licensee accumulates 18 points, including points upon which suspension action is taken under paragraph (a), within an 18-month period, the suspension shall be for a period of not more than 3 months.

(c) When a licensee accumulates 24 points, including points upon which suspension action is taken under paragraphs (a) and (b), within a 36-month period, the suspension shall be for a period of not more than 1 year.

If you get 18 or more points in a two-year period, you'll be subject to an administrative hearing. You can be given up to a year's suspension then. You can also be suspended for failing to attend the Driver Safety Program (which is mandatory if you get ticketed twice in one year).

Each state has a different number. Some have a threshold where if you get above a certain number in a specific period you get a letter telling you to come in for a chat about your excessive point levels, implying if you don't show up you'll get suspended.

Each offense might be anything from 6 to 20 points with each offense having a certain number of points from 1 (minor ticket) to the maximum (automatic suspension).

Let's say the state has 10 points in 12 months or 15 in 24 months gets you a suspension for one year. Each month that you don't get any points moves the "window" so that after a while the points come off. Now, let's say that the law requires that once you have six points, you have to come in for a hearing to determine if you are fit to drive, that if you don't show up you get a six-month suspension.
