Only one can be chambered unless you have a double barrel, then there can be two. If you mean how many can be in the magazine of a repeating shotgun, you can have onlyone in the chamber and two in the magazine when hunting migratory waterfowl. Otherwise, as many as it will hold (commonly 5 in most pumps or automatics and 3 in bolt actions). However, if you live in an anti-gun state like Kalifornia or New Jersey, there may be legal limits, but they should only affect "hi-capacity" removable magazines, ie, no magazines that hold more than 9 shells.
