One of the benefits of a voluntary military is you have people who have chosen to to be there. In the days of the draft where the person was selected by the draft board to be in the military there were people who did not want to be there. The drafted soldier quickly learned the best way to get his tour of duty over was to work. One of the advantages of the draft was that many of the soldiers brought into the Army had a higher education level. Oddly enough many of these drafted soldiers moved up the ranks quickly and assumed leadership roles (Fire Team Leaders and Squad Leaders).
The US Army MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) 13F is Fire Support Specialist. A 13F is a member of a Fire Support Team. Given the military penchant for making acronyms into words, F+S+T = FiST; ergo, a member of a Fire Support Team is a "FiSTer."
A fireteam is a military team composed of four or less members. The four members are Squad leader, Support gunner or supressor, rifleman, and grenadier. A fire team is a unit in a Squad. A Squad's leader is called the "NCO".
It will depend on the structure of the unit, and the level of the Sgt. In a US Army Infantry company, a SGT E-5 (lowest SGT) typically is in charge of a Fire Team which is typically 3-5 soldiers. A Staff Sgt (E-6) is in charge of a Squad of 2 fire teams, and a Platoon Sgt (E-7) in charge of a Platoon of 3 Squads.
Cpl Shampaner was commanding what Marine commanders refer to as a Hunter/ Killer Team. His team was ambushed by as many as 6 enemy combatants. He and his shooter repelled three separate attacks and neutralized as many as 4 enemy soldiers from a range of 25 meters. They neutralized these soldiers with rifle fire and Shampanier exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire to throw hand grenades. Shampaner later acknowledged that his shooter should have been recognized as well for his extreme heroics.
In the US military, you'd probably be referring to a squad's Automatic Rifleman, who carries the M249 SAW. Each fire team in an infantry squad has one, and their role is suppressive and supporting fire, particularly to lay down covering fire while the other fire team bounds, flanks around, or moves otherwise.
A standard rifle fire team typically consists of four members: a team leader, a rifleman, a grenadier, and an automatic rifleman.
Tattoo was a signal that called soldiers and sailors back to their quarters. It came to represent an entertainment for an evening. Today it refers to a military musical performance that may include other exhibitions of military skills.
