The drafted soldier quickly learned the best way to get his tour of duty over was to work. They neutralized these soldiers with rifle fire and Shampanier exposed himself to enemy machine gun fire to throw hand grenades. Shampaner later acknowledged that his shooter should have been recognized as well for his extreme heroics.
