Describe the improvements in military technology in the civil war?
A few years after the war smokeless gunpowder was invented, and breech-loading repeating rifles using metallic cartridges came into widespread use. Civil War rifle muskets had mostly been muzzle-loading, single shot blackpowder weapons, using paper-wrapped cartridges, or loose powder and ball. The Gatling gun was soon outmoded compared with gas-operated machine guns, within twenty years after the war. Breech-loading artillery with metallic, single piece cartridges replaced muzzle-loading artillery using paper wrapped powder and separate ammunition. The new artillery had hydraulic recoil mechanisms to return the gun to battery, meaning the artillery piece did not have to be rolled back into position by hand after each shot, and the point of aim was maintained after firing. Rifling of artillery became very widespread. All these improvements vastly increased range, accuracy and rate of fire. Battlefield communications, such as field telephones combined with a system of forward observers to identify targets and correct aim during firing made possible remote artillery fire. This meant the gunners no longer needed to be within sight of the target, as had normally been the case with artillery in the Civil War.
