Around the World in Nautical Miles
For the purposes of travel, units of measurement are important. Not only do units of measure tell you have far you have gone, and how far you have left to go, but are a way to… communicate progress and location to others. While terms like mile and kilometer are familiar, the measurement of a nautical mile is less so. Based on the metric system, it is a universal measurement.A regular mile is the seemingly arbitrary measurement of 5,280 feet. A nautical mile, on the other hand, is about 6,076 feet. A nautical mile is 1,852 meters while a kilometer is only 1,000 meters. A mile on land is measured by a different system than both the nautical mile and the kilometer, which accounts for some of the difference. In 1592, the British Parliament decided that a mile was 8 furlongs long. This totals the current day 5,280 feet. A furlong is based on how far a set of oxen could plow in a day. That is why the distance seems so arbitrary. Kilometers and nautical miles are both far more scientific than that. The nautical mile is based on Earth's circumference. The lines of latitude around Earth's equator form equal segments that are called degrees. There are 360 of these degrees. Each of these degrees is divided into minutes. Each of these minutes represents a nautical mile. Kilometers are, likewise, based on Earth's size.A nautical mile is used for travel by sea. There is an international agreement on what the size of a nautical mile is, and anyone with a map that has the lines of latitude on it can determine distance by nautical mile with it. Because it is so universal, it is also used for measuring distance by air.The term "knot" is used for traveling by boat. A single knot is the a single nautical mile traveled in one hour. Therefore, traveling at 3 knots means that you will travel 3 nautical miles in one hour. An average speed by water, for modern ships, is between 15 and 25 knots. The universal usage of the nautical mile is commonly applied to two common forms of travel: Air and sea. It is longer than both a mile and a kilometer, but it is broken down into even measurements for the Earth. Also, this measurement has its own form of speed measurement in the form of the "knot." In addition to all these things, it is also easy to understand. The metric system was developed in its first form by John Wilkins around 1668. The measurements existed, but there was not any kind of organization or cohesive system. Wilkins based this on accurately measuring the Earth, which followed a standard measurement. Later, the prefixes were added to make the measurements more uniform. (MORE)

Paying Taxes in More Than One Country
A person who lives in the United States has to pay income taxes every year unless he or she is exempt. The person who pays income tax both lives and works within the United St…ates. However, not every American citizen works in America. When someone who is a U.S. resident works in another country, taxes are paid differently. Tax equalization is paying taxes in a way that offsets the difference between the country someone lives in and the country that they work in.Some major corporations have offices and manufacturing in many countries. When locals in the foreign country cannot fill in the department, the corporation might ask some of their managers that live in the United States to take the job. A person who has an overseas assignment would be a scenario in which tax equalization would arise. There are also some companies which are considered multinational corporations, and anyone who works for them would fall into this special tax category. Tax equalization is taxes that people would pay if they live in the United States even if they work in another country. The taxes are supposed to match up with what the same salary would be in the United States. However, sometimes the rate is higher than what the worker would pay if he or she were in the native country. If the person has to pay a rate that is a lot higher than at home, then he or she is entitled to be reimbursed the extra money. This process protects a taxpayer, and gives him or her back the excess taxes they paid. This is called tax protection. All citizens need to pay taxes to their native country. However, people end up paying double taxes in some scenarios. The equalization of taxes can be beneficial to someone working overseas in many ways. The employee is responsible for paying taxes, which may be difficult if they are away from home for long periods. The biggest benefit to the equalization of taxes is a certain amount of money can be taken out of each paycheck to help cover whatever taxes they are going to have to owe that year. To help an employee who is working overseas, some corporations have an equalization for taxes policy. The reason for having a policy is for a corporation to help their employees who are in another country. To make things fairer, the responsibility of the taxes lies with both the employee and the company they work for. The employee will pay what they would normally pay if they were still working at home. However, the company will pay all of the worldwide effective taxes on behalf of their employee. Equalization of taxes can mean something other than taxes for people who work in another country. In some states, the equalization of taxes has to do with property taxes. Two states in the United States that use this term are Nebraska and North Dakota. In these states, the equalization of taxes refers property taxes. If someone does not agree with the assessment of their property's value, or the taxes on the property, then there are special commissions that people can file an appeal with. People have to work to earn a living and sometimes their job takes them out of the country. Income tax time can be confusing as it is without the added confusion of working in another country. Tax equalization is when someone who works overseas is supposed to pay the same amount of taxes as if he or she worked in his or her native country. However, many corporations have a policy to help their employees pay the taxes, and the company then helps their worker by paying the worldwide effective taxes. The policies concerning the equalization of taxes are changing all the time. When it comes time for taxes, there are specialists who handle taxes for people who are working overseas. A qualified expatriate tax advisor knows all about taxes for overseas workers and can help with tax protection. (MORE)

How to Increase Your Vehicle's Gas Mileage
If you will take a few simple steps you will increase the gas mileage of your vehicle. Getting more miles per gallon ensures that you spend less money at the gas station. Thes…e simple steps can easily be completed at home. For the most part you will not even need any tools in order to increase your gas mileage. If you are driving on under-inflated tires, then you are not getting the best gas mileage possible. Look in the owner's manual and determine what is the best air pressure per square inch for your tires. Use a tire air gauge to measure the pressure in each tire on a regular basis, but especially when the temperature changes. Driving on under-inflated tires is dangerous and also decreases your gas mileage by up to 25 percent.Make sure that you plan your route in an organized manner. If you find it difficult to plan a route in your head, then make sure to use a program or a map to help you. Save as many errands in one end of town as you can, so that you can do them all together. This will not only save you miles, but also frustration from having to drive more miles every day.Anything that is attached to your car should be removed when you are not using them. This includes luggage racks, bike racks, and ski racks. Each of these items will stop the wind from moving effectively around your vehicle and thus decrease the car's fuel mileage. When the gas pump shuts off, then stop putting gas in the car's tank. The car will not burn the extra gas that you force into your car's tank effectively. Therefore, you will be buying more gas, but you won't be getting more miles for your money. When possible take a longer time to achieve your driving speed and a longer time to stop. Don't gun the engine, and don't slam on the brakes in other words. Accelerate and decelerate gradually instead. In addition, driving at a constant speed below 60 miles an hour will increase your gas mileage the most. For every five miles you drive over 60 miles per hour, you are wasting 5 percent more gas. Therefore, leave earlier and keep your speed constantly under 60 miles per hour. Speeds under 30 also decrease your gas mileage so attempt to stay on highways whenever possible. When you are stopping to let someone out of your car or waiting to pick someone up, do not idle your vehicle, as it is burning gas. Instead, whenever feasible turn off the car's engine. When you start your engine it does use some extra gas, but not as much as you would burn if you kept the vehicle idling for longer periods of time.Gas can be expensive. Therefore, it is important to get more miles per gallon whenever you fill up. Start by checking the pressure in your tires as this can decrease your gas mileage by up to 25 percent. When driving on your properly-inflated tires, make sure to never idle your car when you can turn it off instead. When feasible, keep your driving speed between 35 and 60 miles an hour on carefully planned routes to incorporate as many stops in one trip as possible. Try to increase the time you take to get to your driving speed and slow to a gradual stop. Combining all these tips will give you the most miles per gallon possible for your vehicle.Another thing to bear in mind when trying to keep your car's miles per gallon rate up is mechanical servicing. Often a tune-up can help boost the miles per gallon. (MORE)
Federal Agency Overviews: A Look at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is a U.S. federal agency and an essential bulwark protecting U.S. citizens from illegal discrimination in employment. The commissio…n works against various types of employment prejudice including age, gender, race, sexual orientation and disability discrimination. Established in 1965, it has its roots in a mandate from the Civil Rights Act of 1964.The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission works primarily through civil litigation against alleged employment discriminators. It responds to around 100,000 complaints a year alleging discrimination. Sex, race and retaliatory discrimination represent the most frequent allegations. Retaliation, in this case, occurs when an employee reports alleged discrimination in a workplace to a supervisor or other authority and is penalized for reporting. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission maintains a great deal of discretion over which cases it takes and how it prosecutes them. It not only takes complaints from workers who feel they have experienced discrimination, as it also searches for evidence of workplace prejudice even without complaints. It also defines for itself which types of people are protected. For instance, in 2012, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission added the protection of transgender individuals to its agenda. It also protects against discrimination by age, sex, sexual orientation, race and disability. This commission stirs up controversy across the country. Major philosophical schools in American politics argue that its anti-discrimination efforts are too zealous; additionally, some even assert that private employers hold the right to discriminate. Proponents of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, however, view the agency as understaffed and underfunded. The agency relies on independent contractors, which many have criticized as underqualified, to pre-screen complaints. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has its headquarters in Washington D.C. and maintains 53 branch offices across the country to serve citizens. The first step for individuals experiencing discrimination, except in the case of Equal Pay Act violations, requires filing a Charge of Discrimination. The Commission investigates, but only attempts to extract a settlement if it finds a violation of the law. Otherwise, the agency takes no direct action. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is vital for reducing workplace discrimination. However, due to the difficulty in proving discrimination without a doubt, the agency fails to correct many cases of real wrongdoing. In addition, it expends a great deal of unnecessary effort in places where real discrimination does not exist.Federal employees are afforded the same protection as non-federal employees, although the filing process is different. If you are a federal employee with a complaint, you must contact your EEO counselor within 45 days of the incident. (MORE)

Rise and Fall of the American Equal Rights Association
The American Equal Rights Association (AERA) represents a coming together of the gender equality and racial equality movements in America. The two movements had worked togethe…r in the past in an effort to abolish slavery. AERA was an official way to bring the two movements together to work toward key initiatives. Ultimately, the group failed because key leaders in the movements could not come to agreement on important topics. From the very beginning, disagreements plagued AERA. Susan B. Anthony and Lucy Stone, two leaders in the women's rights movement, first proposed the coming together of women's rights and racial equality at a January 1866 meeting of the American Anti-Slavery Society. The group came together under original founders, Anthony, Stone, Elizabeth Stanton and Fredrick Douglass. Before the group could even have its first meeting, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper delivered a speech at the National Women's Rights Convention that spoke to the differences between the suffering of white and black women in America. That was the first of numerous ideological rifts that eventually surfaced in the group.Sojourner Truth was a key speaker at the first meeting of the American Equal Rights Association. The meeting occurred on the first anniversary of the organization's founding. Her speech was meant to enliven the organization while also outlining a path for progress. She did not want to see equal women's rights come about through violence. Though she was pleased that slavery had been abolished, she did not like the fact that it took a war to bring about change. She wanted to see women gain rights peacefully. The passage of the Fourteenth Amendment was a source of controversy in the organization. Those on the side of women's suffrage felt the amendment could have been designed to encompass both women's rights and black male suffrage. Others felt that including women could derail progress toward passage. The group withstood the passage of the amendment, but not for long. It was soon realized that the group could not continue to work under such substantial differences of opinion. Disagreements over how to handle voting rights effectively led to the demise of the American Equal Rights Association. On the one hand, leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton felt that black men and upper class white women should be given the right to vote at the same time. Stanton once noted that she would not trust a black man with all of her rights. On the other side, leaders like Frederick Douglass felt there should be a strong push behind achieving voting rights for black males. Once that was accomplished, he felt the same push should go behind achieving voting rights for women of all races. AERA disbanded in 1869. The final straw surrounded the issue of voting rights. Upon disbandment, the National Woman Suffrage Organization came into existence. The organization did not include racial issues amongst its initiatives. Another organization that formed out of the disbandment was the American Woman Suffrage Association. This group did not exclude racial issues. The two groups remained separate until joining together as the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1890.Though the ultimate goal was equality, the American Equal Rights Association failed because its leadership could not agree on how to advance rights. One side feared being held back by the other. This failure went against tradition, as women's rights activists and racial activists worked jointly prior to the abolishment of slavery. Eventually the groups were able to come to an agreement that met the needs of individuals on both sides of the fence. AERA only existed for three years. Within one year of the organization's founding, disagreements arose. The group divided on race, gender, liberal, and conservative ideologies. (MORE)

Home Appraisals Based on Price Per Square Foot
One way to compare real estate costs is to calculate the price per square foot. There are several variables to consider when determining the square foot cost, such as the loca…tion of the property, the materials used to construct the home, and the total square footage of living space. Homes are not appraised solely based on the square foot calculation. Rather, it is a way to compare prices of similar properties in a given neighborhood. One factor in price determination is the price of other real estate in the area. If you are looking at three homes in a neighborhood, of varying sizes, you can calculate the square foot price of each. Simply take the total square footage and divide it by the selling price. A home on the market for $250,000 that has 2,500 square feet of living space would calculate to $100 per square foot. Home B may have a selling price of $250,000 but only have 1,300 square feet of living space. The price per square foot of home B would be approximately $200 per square foot. The market value of a home is not determined solely by the price per square foot calculation. Market values are determined primarily based on the economy. If the economy is booming and the unemployment rate is low, market values will go up. The law of supply and demand creates an increase or decrease in the market value of real estate as well. For example, if there is a new business in the region and an anticipated influx of buyers, the market value of each available piece of property will skyrocket. Amenities offered in the home and on the property also play a large part in determining the market value of a home. A 2,500 square foot home located on a corner lot with an in-ground pool will have a higher market value than a 2,500 square foot home with no pool, adjoining a commercial property. It is useful to calculate the square footage when looking at real estate prices, however it is not the only factor you should use in determining whether or not it is a fair asking price for the real estate. Calculations are simply mathematical equations and do not account for variables. Two homes both 2,500 square feet with granite countertops and tile floors may sit in the same development and both be priced at $250,000. Does this mean both are of equal value? Not necessarily. One may be a resale and the other a brand new, never lived in home. One may have a well-drained lawn and the other be sitting on top of an underground spring. Although both would calculate to be $100 per square foot, there would be a vast difference in the two properties.Square foot pricing is not an objective process. Each real estate agent uses surrounding properties to aid in determining the square foot price of the property he is selling. Therefore, prices vary region to region. Furthermore, prices per square foot can vary greatly within the same city. If pricing is done solely on the calculation of usable space, there will be a greater similarity from region to region. As other factors are calculated into the equation, it becomes more difficult to maintain standardized pricing.Real estate assessments consider the price per square foot; however it is all of the variable factors that create the unique profile of a particular piece of property. Listings feature the unique characteristics of a piece of property, and it is most often the unique qualities that become the selling points. Two similar properties with the primary difference being the flooring will be assessed at different values. Hardwood flooring has a higher valuation than a plywood floor covered with carpeting.Calculations are often based solely on the price of the property divided by the number of square feet of living space. Other factors need to be considered when viewing real estate advertised using square foot pricing. The materials used in constructing the home need to be considered, as does unique features such as a fireplace or crown molding throughout the home. The layout of the home, the direction the home is facing and otherUsing square foot pricing is helpful, but only to a certain point. It is a helpful tool to use in the initial comparison of shopping for real estate property, but should not be used as the only factor in deciding on a purchase. Two homes located side by side and selling for the exact price per square foot are not equal. The details of the location of the property, the material used to construct the home, and the usability of the overall property are additional factors for consideration. There are several categories of homes, assigned primarily because of the materials used to construct the home and the unique features found within. Economy homes are basic homes built with the lowest grade of construction materials. Standard homes are sturdy but use cost saving materials. Homes listed as custom-built homes will have unique features and some added amenities. Luxury homes are those built with the highest quality material and loaded with amenities and unique features.
