First, it is worth noting that since the television era, the State of the Union Address has become something of a public performance. Presidents, First Ladies, and members of congress invite guests, and the entire event has become a blend of patriotism and politics. It wasn't originally set up that way-- it was a Constitutional requirement that each president report to congress on how the country was doing, but no instructions were given about how this should be carried out, so most presidents just sent a written report. But these days, a State of the Union address is a speech in which the president (whoever is in office) not only reports on how the country is doing, but uses the time to advance his policy goals or defend his achievements.
You may have heard from partisan Talk Shows or websites that President Obama spoke about himself a lot in the January 2016 address. But the reality is he did not mention himself any more frequently than previous presidents in previous State of the Union addresses did. If you compare State of the Union addresses by President Obama with past speeches by President Bush, President Clinton, President Reagan, and others, you will find that every president does speak in the first person (I accomplished X, I asked congress to do Y, I call upon all Americans to do Z, etc) during the speech. This is not surprising, since the goal of the address is both informational and political, and each president tries to reach out to the American public in a personal way. Thus, in the State of the Union address, the president makes sure to use the time to let Americans know that (a) the state of the union is strong, and (b) the policies of the current administration are helping to keep it that way.
