According to one source, George W. Bush spent 879 days at his Crawford Ranch. This doesn't mean this was a vacation for him, he constantly flew in staff member, held press conferences, and met with 18 world leaders at the ranch.

Another source reveals that during 2 terms as President, Bush spent all or of part of 487 days at Camp David, on retreats and made 77 trips to his Crawford Ranch, in Texas, where he spent all or part of 490 days, on his Ranch.

The total number of days of vacation or retreat President Bush took, while in office over a period of 8 years was 977 days, or 32% of his total time in office, was spent on vacations or retreats.

Whichever source is accurate, he spent approximately 1/3 of his time away from the White House. That does not necessarily mean that he was not available if needed

According to newspaper sources, President George H.W. Bush spent large portions of every summer (usually July and August, but sometimes into early September) at the family estate in Kennebunkport, Maine. He would also go there on certain holidays. The total number of days varies: some sources say the total was about 220 days total (other sources say it was more).

For 15 years, Laura Bush and four female friends have escaped together for a week every summer. They arrived at Mammoth Lakes on July 8, 2001 and a day later came to Tuolumne Meadows Lodge with an entourage of some 25 people, including Secret Service agents, a White House communications team, various aides and several park officials. The group took up about 15 of the 70 cabins at the site.

July 27, 2003 Laura Bush and all her friends arrived at Lake Crescent Lodge in Washington state for a week long vacation in the Olympic National Forest. "I have a group of friends that I grew up with in Midland, Texas, and we hike every summer at a national park," said Mrs. Bush. Yes, she and her friends arrived on Air Force II with lots of Secret Service Agents.

July 23, 2006 Denali National Park & Preserve in Alaska

First Lady Laura Bush arrived in the park by train on July 23rd for a one-week vacation at a private inholder lodge in the Kantishna area. Members of the park staff assisted Secret Service and White House personnel with communications, security and logistics. A small number of rangers from other parks in the region were detailed to Denali to maintain normal operations so that a portion of the parks law enforcement staff could be assigned full-time to augment and assist the Secret Service details. During the week. Mrs. Bush and a small group of friends enjoyed daily hiking excursions throughout the park. On Friday, July 28th, she and her companions traveled to park headquarters to tour the Murie Science and Learning Center, a collaborative venture by Denali, seven other national parks, and several park partners. She later attended a luncheon hosted at the center and greeted park staff and the regional director. [Submitted by Richard Moore, North District Ranger]

This is the second time in the last couple-three months that LaWa has taken advantage of a western national park for a little "getaway with close friends" whose number, names, relationships, and particularly gender is somehow never mentioned.

In June 2008, First Lady Laura Bush visited Mount Desert Island, Maine with a small group of friends for a brief vacation. She did not plan any public appearances before she arrived, but she was out in the public eye during her visit and met with Acadia National Park superintendent Sheridan Steele.

Laura Bush and her daughters, Barbara and Jenna, traveled to Africa in 2007, where they went on safari. Yet her trip was regarded as an "official" visit and included several public events.

First, let's put things in perspective. In the modern era, the president who took the least vacation days during his presidency, according to several presidential historians, was Bill Clinton. The president who took the most during his presidency was George W. Bush. Here are some numbers, as of the 3rd year of Mr. Obama's presidency (late 2011), compared with a few other presidents:

In the first three years in office, President Obama took 61 days of vacation. In Mr. Bush's first three years, he spent 180 days at his ranch or at Camp David. Mr. Clinton took only 28 days of vacation. Ronald Reagan took 112 vacation days. And in fairness, no president is ever totally on vacation-- even when they leave the White House to travel somewhere with their family for some relaxation, they are still at work, still taking phone calls from their aides or cabinet members; still scheduling meetings if important issues come up; and making sure they are informed about any potential areas of concern. It should also be noted that no matter who is in office, his political opponents will always accuse him of being on vacation too much.

According to CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, considered the unofficial presidential statistician, Obama has taken nine vacations since taking office. By the end of August, 2010, Knoller said, Obama willl have spent 48 days on vacation since he became president on January 20, 2009.

Knoller says President George W. Bush spent 879 days on holiday during his eight years in office.

Being the president is not an easy job. Any President deserves a vacation. Just as President George Bush did when he went to Crawford, Texas or Ronald Reagan to California or Bill Clinton to Martha's Vineyard. President Bush on these "vacations" found time to visit with nearly twenty heads of state in Crawford, and in 2002 he wired his ranch so secure video conferencing with intelligence officials could take place. In other words, Crawford, TX was indeed the Western White House. Hawaii and Martha's Vineyard has so far not given President Obama that same ability to project leadership.

Visitors to the Bush Crawford, TX ranch have included:

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin, November 2001
  • British Prime Minister Tony Blair, April 2002
  • Saudi King Abdullah, April 2002, April 2005
  • Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan, August 2002
  • Chinese President Jiāng Zémín, October 2002
  • Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar, February 2003
  • Australian Prime Minister John Howard, May 2003
  • Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi Jun'ichirō, May 2003
  • Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, July 2003
  • Mexican President Vicente Fox, March 2004, March 2005
  • Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, April 2004
  • Spanish King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía, November 2004
  • Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, March 2005
  • Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, April 2005
  • Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, August 2005
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel, November 2007[12]
  • Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, February 2008[13]

The fact that MSLM CBS reporter Knoller reports: "Bush spent a lot of time" does not equate to over 2 years of holiday time (879 days). Knoller does not specify, in detail, the times and spans that equate to 879 holidays and does not explain whether he counts national holidays? Interesting that the Huffington left wing blog, which quotes Knoller, doesn't find it important to document the time Obama has been on vacation but rather rationalizes the idea that a President needs excessive vacation time including playing Basketball with his "dream" team.

According to the questionable unbiased information source, Politico, "By Knoller's count, Saturday's golfing outing with Biden was Obama's 39th round of golf since he took office (and his 7th since the start of the oil spill on April 20th)" which is over 2 times per month. In the last month Knoller has fed information to The Wall Street Journal showing that Obama has already golfed more in 20 months than his predecessor did in his entire two terms of 8 years!

According to Knoller; by the end of August, 2010, Obama will have taken nine vacation trips (48 days). Among the locations were Chicago (twice) and Asheville, N.C., for long weekends; Hawaii, a week and Martha's Vineyard for over two weeks.

In addition, by Knoller's count; the Obamas have enjoyed, at tax payer's expense, 33 gala night events away from the White House. Some are quasi-business related, but also include date nights with the first lady at the best restaurants in Washington, New York and Paris, and theater outings like the one in June they took to see Thurgood at the Kennedy Center. The Obama's have also stayed at Camp David for 14 visits to the presidential retreat for 32 days. Add up just these days and it totals 113 days. Then add in the 7 day trip to get the Nobel prize and the 39 days golfing which equals a total of 159 days out of the short 20 months (608 days) or over 26% of the time he has occupied the White House. This does not count the holidays and weekends that are family "non-working" days.

During the those same 20 months since Obama began his regime, the average American family has taken less that 21 days of vacation, IF they are employed.

In his first four years, he took 84 days (some say 90) of vacation time. But presidents are actually never entirely on vacation, since they need to maintain contact with their staff and be ready to take charge in case a national emergency occurs.
