Jacob had four wives, although technically two of them were only concubines.

1. Leah was the elder daughter of Jacob's uncle Laban. Laban tricked Jacob into this marriage: Jacob had fallen in love with Leah's younger sister Rachel, but Laban, after agreeing that Jacob could have Rachel, sent Leah to the bridal chamber instead. Leah was the mother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Zebulun, Issachar and Dinah.

2. Rachel, the younger daughter of Laban, was married to Jacob a week after her sister. She remained the favourite wife, but she was childless for several years. She eventually gave birth to Joseph, the eleventh son, and some years later still, she died in giving birth to Benjamin.

3. Bilhah, originally the servant of Rachel, became Jacob's concubine when Rachel feared she would be childless. Bilhah was the mother of Dan and Naphtali. Later she had an adulterous affair with her stepson Reuben, in punishment for which Reuben lost the privileges of the firstborn son.

4. Zilpah, originally the servant of Leah, also became Jacob's concubine. She was the mother of Gad and Asher.
