Exploration of inland Australia began the year the First Fleet arrived, in 1788. The explorers gradually expanded their explorations west across the Great Dividing Range through the ensuing decades, spreading out further and further. The last of the major explorations occurred with the likes of Forrest and Warburton in 1874 and Giles in 1875. Giles even referred to himself as "the last of the Australian explorers". This was a total of 87 years.

When you consider that Australia belonged to the Aborigine for perhaps 10,000 years or more, yes Europeans are new to Australia having taken the land from the Aborigine some 200 years ago.
