The average human body has 8-10 pints of blood. The maximum amount of blood you can lose and still be functional is 33% or one-third of your blood. Eventually, your body will collapse and send you into a temporary coma. If more than 66% or two-thirds blood is lost, death is certain. If there is no blood coming in, than about 40% blood loss is when people die.

FIRST OF ALL for any case scenario:

IF YOU ARE UNSURE OR SIMPLY WANT IMMEDIATE PROFESSIONAL HELP IN ORDER FOR YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO OR WHERE TO GO, SIMPLY CALL YOUR COUNTRIES EMERGENCY NUMBER (USA 911, Canada 911, UK 112, Australia 000, New Zealand 111, Most of EUROPE 112) AND THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT.

THEY CAN HELP YOU EVEN IF YOU DON'T NEED TO BE PICKED UP AND YOU JUST WANT TO HAVE PEACE OF MIND THAT YOU ARE OK... !!

I am bleeding, what do I do?

First of all stop the bleeding.

ANY SIGNIFICANT BLOOD LOSS OF 250MLS (ONE SMALL CUP same amount as A TEA CUP) OR MORE IS SOMETHING TO TAKE SERIOUS AND YOU SHOULD BE DRIVEN TO YOUR LOCAL DOCTOR OR ANY LOCAL DOCTOR OR HOSPITAL EMERGENCY BY SOMEONE IN THE SAME HOUSE or NEIGHBORHOOD AS YOU!

IF THERE IS NO ONE IN THE SAME AREA AS YOU TO TAKE YOU THEN YOU NEED TO CALL AN AMBULANCE!!

DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF AS YOU COULD PUT OTHER PEOPLES LIVES WHO ARE DRIVING ON THE ROAD AT RISK!!

Hospital is too far away OR it is night time and the doctors is closed:

There should be a local doctor at hand who is on an emergency night shift for your local accident and emergency facility. These should exists in almost all countries! And can be found in your local phonebook...

IF THE HOSPITAL EMERGENCY IS TO FAR AWAY (SAY MORE THAN AN HOURS DRIVE) THEN RING YOUR LOCAL ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY FACILITY WHERE THEY SHOULD HAVE A DOCTOR ON A 24HOUR EMERGENCY AVAILABILITY. CALL THEM AND ASK THEM WHAT YOU NEED TO DO.. (IF YOU ASK THEM THEY MAY BE ABLE TO COME TO YOU). IF YOU CAN'T FIND THIS FACILITY IN YOUR PHONE BOOK OR IF THEY ARE NOT ANSWERING THE PHONE THEN CALL AN AMBULANCE AS THEY ARE MUCH FASTER AT GETTING TO YOU.. THAN YOU ARE AT GETTING TO A HOSPITAL.

A totally different scenario!

I'm having a miscarriage. How much bleeding is normal during a miscarriage?

Any bleeding is serious including bleeding during a miscarriage.

If you are having a miscarriage and bleeding anymore than your normal period then you need to call help immediately!!

It is not normal in any case what so ever to be losing more blood than a normal period during a miscarriage.

The only thing that should be coming out is clumps and clots of blood that are red fleshy looking. And you should have the same amount of liquid blood coming out as your normal heavy period.

If anymore is coming out than what a pad can soak up within half an hour

(in other words if you need to change your pad every 30 min's or less then..) THEN YOU ARE IN SERIOUS DANGER AND NEED TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT OR BETTER YET CALL AN AMBULANCE! Don't think you will just be ok.

What's most likely happening is that a clot of red flesh or any other such solid part or parts are stuck making your body try to "bleed" them out by flushing blood past it. Meaning that the flesh or other such solid part won't shift until the doctor removes it, meaning it will make you continue to bleed over the course of several hours until you then pass out and eventually die. So do something about it now! Call an ambulance or go to the hospital emergency!

NOW, A DIRECT ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION for people who are interested in the bodies ability to survive.

How much blood can you lose?

You can loose a small amount of blood and you will feel very weak (say under half a liter ""500ml / otherwise known as two tea cups full""). This amount of blood loss is serious, but in direct answer to this question it is normally fully survivable.

You can further lose, say up to 1 liter, and you will survive 'as such' but the blood loss is now very serious and you will feel very weak and will be feeling far from your normal self as you won't have a lot of energy! You will be finding it a little bit hard to stand and walking will feel hard also. It's unlikely you will be able to walk very far without starting to feel very week indeed. You will most likely be feeling like your body wants to faint or you may even have fainted by now.

(If you rapidly lost up to 1.5 liters of blood really fast then you can actually die. So obviously the faster and harder you are bleeding the higher the risks of fatality)

If you lose any amount of blood at very very fast rate (like say your limb got chopped off or you hacked into a main artery) then obviously the blood loss is far greater than a normal wound and you would need to call an ambulance immediately no matter how little blood you have lost so far.

If you lose anything up to 1.5 liters or more via a slow to medium rate then you also will need to call an ambulance or have someone call one for you IMMEDIATELY!

As by this stage you will need to replace all that blood loss with saline liquid or a blood transfusion or you will pass-out over the next hour or so due to further blood loss or the simple fact that your body is failing to cope with the low blood pressure. You will be looking very pale and you won't be able to hold your heat. The basic physical signs will be showing. Take it serious and call for help!

If you lose up to 2 liters or more you need to be in hospital right away and be attended to right away, as by this stage if the doctors don't act fast you will die!

If you lose more than 2.5 liters you may likely need resuscitating.

It then quite obviously goes without saying that loosing 3 liters of blood is obviously very very very seriously dangerous and by this time you are hopefully already in the hospital getting a transfusion. You may still be conscious but if you are you won't really be able to move your body at all. It's likely you would actually be unconscious and need resuscitating.

Last but not least:

From what I am aware, it is what you could call "possible" to lose up to about 3.9 liters of blood if it was lost slowly over a decent length of time say during a surgery, BUT you will only really survive if you are already in the hospital and under full control of the doctors. By this stage you would be unconscious. Further more you would already need to be in the process of having a blood transfusion otherwise your chances of survival are non existent.
