Roman gladiators were slaves, not mercenaries. They do not get paid in that sense. They do not fight whenever they want. The lanista (roman gladiator slave master/owner) determined when a gladiator would fight. That and the gladiator event manger. (Munera manager/host) (Munera is a latin term) The Emperor had sole control over even the most significant lanista though. He was the main boss. Gladiators are warrior slaves that can be paid their (missio) or freedom if they prove their worth. (Missio is a latin term) Nevertheless, the more battles a gladiator won, the more prizes or spoils/wealth he would receive. If a gladiator proved to be victorious and entertaining to the crowd to a great enough degree he could be freed and/or keep the wealth he accumulated as a gladiator. Though there was a big choice after that. A gladiator veteran who chooses to return to the gladiator way of life and become a gladiator again is payed even more than his first time around. If he gets his 2nd missio, retires again and chooses to return to the business yet another time, he will be payed even more than his 2nd time around. But that is a very rare situation. Most of them would die before such a thing could happen or are just wise and have common sense ultimately choosing not to return to a life as a gladiator after being freed.
Gladiators were slaves and slaves are not paid. Many were captured men from battles with Rome. The best they could expect is freedom from the slavery. If they got that far before they were killed in the games along with the freedom did come the chance for wealth and to be a "rock" star in the Roman world.
Well, professional gladiators received a small fee for each combat. I'm doing an essay on this and gladiator life was VERY interesting.
I doubt it, they weren't expected to live.
Roman gladiators were paid in prize money. That is, if they won.
nothing, that's the point
Gladiators are from Ancient Rome.
Yes they did. Gladiators were owned and trained by sponsors ( similar to football teams today) and the different sponsors would match gladiators against each other. Often betting took place on the outcome of the battle. This was a big business owning gladiators and training them. A lot of prestige came with having the best "line up" of gladiators.
Beacause gladiators were slaves, they were slaves beacause they either commited a crime.
Gladiators were professional fighters who battled to entertain the public, politicians, and rulers of ancient Rome

No, they were slaves taken in war.
Gladiators don't get PAID (not piad), they are really just slaves who die for the entertainment of the emperor and the public.
they get paid a nickel and a dime with a penny full of wine
The gladiators were slaves. They did not get paid. They lived at gladiatorial schools and were kept by their trainers.
they were paid in salt 'sala' and sometimes money
No, the Romans just about adored gladiators. Gladiators have been likened to the rock stars of the ancient world. Wealthy women threw themselves at them, and they were highly paid for their services when they won.
Only if they chose to be, but this would be very unusual, since most gladiators were slaves and only paid if they won a battle and didn't die.
The Public treated them like heroes and they were well paid, assuming they weren't prisoners of war.
