Mercury, the planet has a mass of 3.30e23 kg

This mass is 7.26 x 1023 lb. that is around 5.5% of the mass of the Earth.
3.3 x 1023 kg. So 3300000000000000000000000 kg To convert into pounds x 2.20462262 = pounds 7275254646000000000000000 lbs

Since the average density of mercury is 113.04 lb/gal, the reciprocal of that will tell you how many gallons -- or fractions of a gallon -- one pound is. The reciprocal is 0.00885 gal/lb, so one pound is only 0.00885 gallon or 1.13 fluid ounces, which is equivalent to 2.039 cubic inches. At 20 degrees C (68 degrees F), Mercury is 13.55 g/cm3. So, you need (453.59237 / 13.55) 33.48 cm3 to get one pound of mercury. That means a cube, 1.269 inches on a side will hold 1 pound of mercury at room temperature. That's 2.04 cubic inches.

The volume of a Golf ball is about 40 cm3 (the same as a cube about 2.5 inches on a side). So, a golf ball-sized container of mercury will weigh about 1 pound 3 ounces.

Note, even though we rely on the linear expansion behavior of mercury for use in thermometers, it doesn't expand all that much.

At 300 degrees C (572 degrees F), Mercury is 12.88 g/cm3. So, you'd need (453.59237 / 12.88) 35.22 cm3 to get one pound of mercury. That means a cube 1.295 inches on a side will hold one pound of mercury at the temperature of the broiler in your oven at full blast. The 300 degree C golf ball-sized container of mercury will weigh about 1 pound 2 ounces.

1 UK gallon = 4,54609 L = 4546,09 mL

Density of mercury: 13,534 g/cm3

Mass = volume x density = 4546,09 x 13,4534 = 61526,782 g = 61,527 kg

For the US gallon use the volume 3,785411784 L.

You must first find the density of pure mercury, which is 13594kg/m3. Use the density equation and solve for volume.

density = mass/volume

volume = mass/density = (1.000kg)/(13594kg/m3) = 7.356 x 10-5m3

It's a surprising property of that unique element, that 1 pound of mercury weighs

precisely 1.00 pound, regardless of whether it happens to be in the gaseous, solid,

or liquid phase at the time.
