Reporter salaries can vary widely depending on their experience, location, and employer. Entry-level reporters may earn around $30,000 to $40,000 per year, while more experienced reporters at major outlets can make over $100,000 annually. Specialized reporters, such as those in sports or finance, may earn even more.

For print reporters, anywhere from $15,000 for a full-time reporter at your local surburban weekly paper to over $100,000 as an investigative reporter at a major paper, like the Washington Post, NY Times or Chicago Tribune. Probably an average of $40,000-$50,000 at a big city daily. Be aware that even with a journalism degree and experience, it's hard to break in to this field.

Newspaper Reporter salaries vary depending on whether the publication is

weekly or daily, size of its circulation, experience level of the reporter, the type

of publication, and whether the position is union affiliated.

Recent 2006 USA salary surveys show the following hourly wage rate.

(not including fringe benefits)

for Daily Publications*

Entry level: $15 - 20 per hour

Experienced: $20 - 30

for Weekly Publications*

Entry level: $10 - 15 per hour

Experienced: $15 - 20

for Others*

Critics, columnists, feature writers, and other specialists usually receive

salaries well above base levels. Reporters receive time off or are compensated

for overtime and for special assignments that require them to work under

hazardous or stressful conditions. Stringers are paid according to the size

and type of news stories printed.

It depends, however, there have been journalists that have been paid as much as £1000 for an article. Newspapers like to get the front page news out before anyone else, so it is very hectic and pressurising for the journalist, but they do pay ransoms for this work, even if it has a ton of mistakes.
