The answer to this depends on where you are and the time of year. I am in California and the melons sold now are from Mexico and usually sell for about .40 cents a pound. We grow melons locally and in mid summer I can usually find them for 3.99 each. One summer I was in NYC and saw fruit from my area in California selling for really high prices.

Depend where you buy it, but farmers markets are usually cheaper.
