I've had my in-ground pool for 21 years. It's a typical smallish home pool, about 10,000 gallons and 25 feet on the long dimension. We're in Florida so it's warm most of the year; you'll use less of everything in colder climates. At 2009 prices, we spend about $275 per year on chemicals & such and we average $100 per year on repairs (O-rings, pump motors etc.). Electricity to run the pump is currently $500 per year so our "operating" cost is $875 annually or $73 per month.

There is one other cost to consider: a major refurbishing will be required every 10 to 20 years--the better you pay attention to weekly upkeep, the longer it'll last. I'm planning that right now and averaged over the time since the pool was new we should have been saving about $400 per year to be prepared for that expense. And, of course, the tax man wants about $200 per year in property taxes for their estimate of the pool's value.

It varies depending on pump size and voltage plus a number of other less important factors. You can get an estimate by reading your electric meter and using a specified amount of time. I recomend you do this befor any of your AC unit refridgerators microwaves, large utilities...etc are cycling. Take a 15 minute meter reading befor the pump is on and after another 15 minute reading when pump is off. Multiply your reeding by 4 and that is an aprox kw/h reading. your electric bill is calculated by KW/h. Divide number days in billing cycle to determin aprox kW/h cost. I hope you can do the rest if not then get a profesional to help. It varies depending on pump size and voltage plus a number of other less important factors. How long do you need to run your pool pump. There is a self chlorinator in the system. Salt water pool. Located in the Treasure Coast of Fl?

The amount of time the pump should run for any pool will depend on a few things. Hotter seaons will require your pump to run about 8 hours. Running your pump in hotter seaons also require that the pump runs during the hottest part of the day. You may cut the hours to about 6, or as low as 4 during winter. Please keep in mind "bather load" or heating the pool in the winter can effect the hours your pump should run. During winter pump should be ran at night to avoid freezing of pipes

Should you run your pool pump 24 hrs a day?

Yes it is safe, in fact I would recommend it; I manage a pool and spa store in Richmond, Va and own a pool myself. We never turn the pump off in season except for routine maintenance. Keeping the pump on helps keep the pool properly sanitized, and prevents the growth of algae and water molds. It is to my knowledge, not harmful to the pump, as most of our customers do the same, and we don't have many failures. Manufacturers build the pumps for this kind of use, they are warn out faster by starting and stopping than by continuous operation.

What are the best durations for pool pump to run on two speed with a chlorinator?

A average pool with a chlorinator generally needs to run for about 6 to 8 hours depending on the bioload in the pool however some low speeds run for 24 hours so a separate timer may be needed for the chlorinator if it doesn't cut of automatically.

Do you have to run a pool pump if not using pool for a few days?

You should run your pump about 12 hours each day to keep water clean. You can put your pump on a timer to save money. Don't do that until your water clean and clear. If you are still working to get your water just right you need to keep your pump going full time.

No. Leave your filter running at least 8 hours per day, longer if your pool appears cloudy.

How much time should the filter be running after a new pool is plastered?

The filter doesn't run, the pump does. A good rule of thumb is that the pump be sized so as to turn the entire amount of water in the pool over in 8 hours.
