Recording an album is based on hours. Usually someone can make an entire well put together album anywhere between 60-300 hrs. Most people fall into the 90-150 hr range. The part that is tough to figure out is how much an hour. You can get time for $30 to $200 an hour, depending on the studio. Keep in mind the studio and equipment don't really make the record sound good, its the artist and the engineer working on it.

If you want to record at a good studio, you can do that for 80 - 100 an hour. That is about average, depending on your location. LA and NY seem to be more expensive.

You can also hire a free lance engineer to do it on per song or per album basis. It can go from $50+ a song or maybe $500+ for an album. But I would expect to pay more like 200+ a song and 2,000+ per album. It just all depends on the engineer, how good they are and what kind of equipment they have. Some people dish out hundreds of thousands of dollars. The most money usually should go into marketing and duplication though.

Don't forget to get it mastered! That means you go from the engineer to the master engineer, and that is easier to guess at price, and that would be $500 per album , or $100 per song. That's usually standard.

On average I would say $50/hour. A lot of times you can get price breaks for booking a lot of hours and things like that. Depending on where the studio is located and what gear they have will change the price. Two studios with the same gear, one in LA, and one in Butte, Montana will cost two different prices even if they are exactly the same.

Home studios, and small studios can be fairly cheap. Big studios such as Oceanway will cost hundreds per hour. It all really comes down to the gear, location and the staff. You may find two studios with the same gear, but one has an experienced engineer, while the other doesn't which will effect the price.

It depends, a demo should be around $10k for a good producer with solid professional credentials. A 7 song EP record will cost anywhere from $35k to $50k for a professional producer and upwards. But you should really be getting what you pay for. With this industry everyone knows everyone, and it is very important to make the right contacts from the start. Paying the extra money to have an already established producer is money well spent. But, avoid going to through producers that were popular in the 90's or 80's as those producers have most likely already reached there "peak," go for an up and coming producer with the right connections. Remember, at the end up the day what matters is the music, you could spend thousands of dollars touring, recording, promoting and trying to make contacts but if you don't have the right sound it won't matter. It is vital to have the right producer/songwriting partners. Hope this helps and good luck on your musical quest!

Cheers

On average your probably looking at $50/hr however location, and the size of the studio can drastically change that number. Two of the exact same studios with one in LA and the other in Montana will have different rates due to the amount of people needing the service. The amount and type of gear will also effect the price. A studio that invests millions of dollars on top of the line gear will charge more than some people that just use the bare minimum.

Also, some studios will offer rates per song, or album. They will give you a set price for 8 tracks or something like that.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is more to the process than just recording. The record will still need to be mixed and mastered. Most studios will record and mix, but you will want to verify and check the charges. A mixdown can take many hours depending on the size of the project. That can eat up a budget.

Prices will range depending on location, quality of the studio, with/without an engineer, skill of the engineer, etc. The best way to find out is to call your local studios for rates.

Rates will often be offered in at least two ways: Hourly and project. Hourly, obviously, is a set rate per hour, sometimes with a discount for several consecutive hours (such as booking for a whole day). Project rates vary and aren't always available, but are typically negotiated with the studio depending on the project.

Set up a budget of how much you're willing to spend on the project and call your local studios, see what they can do for you.

Usually, if your not all that familiar with recording; I would suggest trying out your local studio's, or even a small school guerrilla recording set-up, you don't want to go and spend amazing amounts of money just because its a renowned studio, check out your local towns and small cities.

Most of all, when all the decisions are made, before you go into a studio, reherse, reherse, reherse. Getting it in the first take will save you tons of money.
