Food Spending

The USDA calculates average food costs at four different consumption levels: thrifty, low-cost, moderate-cost, and liberal. They assume that all meals and snacks are eaten at home, which lowers the cost. In June 2010, the thrifty plan for a family of 4 per week was $134.50. Low-cost = $175.10 Moderate cost = $219.10 Liberal cost = $265.90.

Personal Experiences:

I'm a 28-year old male semi-professional cyclist. I live alone. For me, enough food in Finland can be bought by 250 euros (c. 386 $). I've tried to buy the cheapest, healthiest foodstuffs and to use the discount university restaurant and even to force a smaller budget, but enough is worth 250 €.

Food is about 25 % cheaper in USA, and most of the people in the world don't have enough food or money for food. In mud hut villages, in average, people use only 30 $/month for food.

The average American family of four spends amount $100-200 a week on groceries. Though my family has personally spent up to $600 an week on groceries when splurging, on heavy meals, large amount of meat, sodas and snacks. But for my family of four we spend about $250 a week, give or take.

Usually between 100.00 and 500.00 but in all honesty it depends on how big your family is and what kind of food you buy. Buying for a one-person family is very different from a 12 person family, and buying boxes of macaroni or cans of soup or tuna is very different from buying steaks and caviar.

According to the USDA the average cost for two people on a very thrifty budget is $90/week. If they are on a very liberal budget, it is closer to $180/week.

For a family of 4, the thrifty quote is about $150/week and the liberal is about $300/week.

[The USDA information is from USDA.gov, and the most recent numbers they have are from July 2014.]
